    Many kings and queens are given nicknames along with their titles. Juana was the third child of Isabel and Fernando “the Catholics”. Her nickname, “la loca”, or “the crazy one” came from her dramatic outbursts, often related to her husband, Felipe “the Handsome”. The question remains, was Juana really loca? Or was she the victim of circumstances and manipulations well out of her control?


    This story is told in the third person and the past tense. Important vocabulary in the story includes: “heredero” (heir), “nacimiento” (birth), “rey” (king), “reina” (queen) and “poder” (power).

  • El primer Inca

    El primer Inca

    “Inca” or “Sapa Inca” is the title given to the kings of the Incan Empire. The incas did not have a written language, rather they had a rich oral tradition. Due to the lack of records, it is hard to know when exactly the Incan state, Tahuantinsuyo began. However, oral tradition tells of the Sun God, Inti, and his desire for a civilized people in the Andes mountains. He sent his son, Manco Capac, to make that dream a reality. Thus Manco Capac became the first Inca.


    This story is told in the third person and the past tense. Important vocabulary in the story includes: “gente” (people), “hundir” (to sink), “tierra” (earth), “enseñó” (taught) and “venerar” (to worship).

  • El nacimiento de una lengua

    El nacimiento de una lengua

    Sign Language is a beautiful form of communication. For many years, the Deaf community was denied education, in large part because of Aristotle. Thankfully, many people recognized the ability of deaf people to communicate using signs. Sign Language became documented and standardized. However, due to dictatorship and revolution, in 1980s Nicaragua, sign language didn’t really exist. So, a group of deaf students created their own language from nothing.


    This story is told in the third person and the past tense. Important vocabulary in the story includes: “lengua de señas/lenguaje de signos” (sign language), “sordo” (deaf), “alfabetización” (literacy), and “labios” (lips).

this series has helped me improve

the stories are short and the author uses a good pace and simple words to help learners. listening to these 10 min stories is very encouraging as it helps you see your level. thank you small town spanish teacher!!

Great for intermediate Spanish!

Great for anyone who has broad Spanish vocabulary but doesn’t have anyway to practice. Will definitely take you from beginner to intermediate. The stories are funny and entertaining and give you chance to understand words by their context.

A fresh new approach to language learning.

So fun! Textbook learning is so much more boring than listening to these stories. The clear, careful diction of the narration makes each word in the stories audible. In addition, the transcripts are all available online, which makes following along possible. These stories really give the language a personality. Definitely worth the listen if you are at an intermediate learning stage.

This is a fun story.

I'm not much passed day 1 of Spanish 1, so I can't understand much yet. With the notes, I could understand all of the first story.

Good stories to help learn Spanish!

I like this podcast to help me grow my vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension in Spanish. I think it's great for beginner to intermediate learners.

Some reviews complain about her pronunciation. I think it's better to think of it as her English accent. She's not a native Spanish speaker, so if you're looking to really improve your pronunciation and lose your accent, it might be better to find a story podcast with native speakers (I like Duolingo's podcast for this).

But there is value in having simple stories told in a slow, clear pace to help auditory comprehension, vocab, and grammar. I listen to these stories before bed, and they're really lovely to fall asleep to. :-)

Great idea, good stories, painful pronunciation.

The pronunciation is nothing short of cringeworthy, kudos to her for trying this, but I'm new to Spanish and I can't even deal with it. Better to have a native speaker or viable pronunciation.
