Short Story 725 - The Virtual Shadow (Intermediate)
Sarah Jenkins was a talented computer science engineer in Manchester. At 28, she worked for CyberGuard, building AI systems for smart homes. Her life was routine: code by day, video games by night. But one morning, everything changed.
Sarah woke to her phone buzzing. A message from an unknown sender: "I know your secrets. Check your email." Her heart raced. In her inbox was a video of her in her flat, taken from inside. "How?" she gasped. No one had been there.
At work, Sarah scanned her computer. She found malware hidden in her AI code. It was a spyware program that turned devices into spies. Cameras and microphones watched users without them knowing. Sarah's team had built the AI, but this wasn't their design.
"Who did this?" Sarah wondered. She traced the code to a colleague, Mark, who had access. Mark was quiet, always working late. Sarah confronted him in the break room. "Did you add spyware to our system?"
Mark's face went pale. "It's not what you think. The boss ordered it. For 'security testing'."
Sarah didn't believe him. That night, she hacked into the company's servers from a café. She found files showing the spyware was sold to a criminal group. They used it to blackmail people. Sarah's own home was hacked because she tested the AI there.
Her phone rang. "Stop now, or your family pays," a voice warned. Sarah hung up, scared but determined. She copied the evidence and sent it to the police anonymously.
The next day, the office was in chaos. Police arrested the boss and Mark. The spyware was shut down. Sarah helped fix the systems, making them safe.
She left CyberGuard and joined a ethical AI firm. No more shadows in her life.

Similar words: Virus (a type of malware that spreads itself), Trojan (malware disguised as safe software), Ransomware (malware that locks files and demands payment).
Spyware
Definition: Spyware is a type of malware that secretly collects information about a person's activities on a computer or device, often sending it to others without consent.
Example: "It was a spyware program that turned devices into spies." (Here, the spyware was using cameras and microphones to watch people.)
Similar words: Adware (software that shows unwanted ads and may spy), Keylogger (a tool that records keystrokes to steal passwords), Tracker (something that follows online behaviour)....
