Thyroid nodules impact 70 percent of adults in their lifetime. The standard of care is surgical removal of half or all of the gland. But in recent years, nonsurgical treatment options have become available. Hi, my name is Jennifer Holkem and I advocate for fellow patients suffering with this very common condition. I sit down with patients and physicians and discuss life with thyroid nodules, the journey from diagnosis to treatment, and how to save your thyroid through nonsurgical advances in medicine.

  • Too Big for Thyroid RFA?
    Jan 27 2026

Are you being told your thyroid goiter is too large for Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) and that surgery is your only option? In this first episode SEASON 7 of Save Your Thyroid, Jennifer Holkem sits down with Dr. Juan Camacho, a leader in Interventional Radiology at Radiology Associates of Florida/Sarasota Memorial, to discuss a game-changing nonsurgical treatment: Pressure-Enabled Thyroid Artery Embolization (PED-TAE).

While RFA is often ineffective for thyroid volumes exceeding 20 mL, Dr. Camacho’s recent clinical research shows a 73% mean volume reduction in massive goiters (averaging 117 mL) using pressure enabled thyroid artery embolization (PED-TAE).

In this video, you will learn:

-Why large multinodular goiters often require more than just thermal ablation.

-How PED-TAE uses pressure to shrink thyroid tissue while preserving organ function.

-The results of Dr. Camacho’s latest publication on euthyroid conversion and safety.

-Information on the new 10-site multi-center registry study for thyroid embolization.

If you are looking for a nonsurgical way to treat a large goiter or want to avoid a sternotomy, this interview is a must-watch.

  • RFA for Thyroid Cancer? Inside Taiwan's Advanced Techniques | Dr. Chan Jung Chang
    Nov 25 2025

The Future of Thyroid Treatment: Advanced RFA, Microcarcinoma, and Taiwan's "One-Stop Shop" Model 🇹🇼

This episode of Save Your Thyroid unveils the groundbreaking world of Thyroid Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA). Host Jennifer Holkem speaks with Dr. Chan Jung Chang, an expert Otolaryngologist from Taiwan, about the future of non-surgical thyroid treatment for both thyroid nodules and papillary thyroid microcarcinoma.

Dr. Chang details why RFA is so widely preferred in Taiwan—driven by a cultural desire for no scarring—and how their streamlined patient journey (the "one-stop shop" model) allows patients to receive comprehensive diagnosis and treatment in just two weeks.

Learn about the advanced techniques crucial for maximizing RFA safety and success: the use of Hydrodissection (enhanced with hyaluronic acid) to protect the vocal cord nerve, and Arterial Ablation to prevent tumor regrowth. Discover the criteria for considering this non-invasive alternative for cancer, why there is no strict size ceiling for RFA, and the importance of consistent long-term follow-up care.

Tune in to discover how patient-centered innovation is preserving the thyroid gland and revolutionizing treatment options.

  • Thyroid Nodules: RFA vs. Surgery (All the Details) | Dr. Wolfe
    Nov 11 2025

What are the real risks of thyroid surgery? A top otolaryngologist (ENT) surgeon, Dr. Michael J. Wolfe, joins me to discuss how to protect your voice and parathyroid glands—and when non-surgical Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a better option.

In this episode, Dr. Michael J. Wolfe explains the crucial role ENTs play in thyroid care due to their deep expertise in neck anatomy. We explore the full diagnostic process for thyroid nodules, what your biopsy results really mean, and have a candid discussion comparing traditional thyroid surgery to the minimally invasive alternative, RFA.

Dr. Wolfe emphasizes the importance of patient empowerment and making informed decisions about your thyroid health.

    In this episode, we cover:

👉The "Big Two" risks of thyroid surgery: protecting your voice and your parathyroid glands

👉An ENT's expert view on the thyroid diagnostic process (imaging, biopsies)

👉Understanding thyroid cancer diagnoses to help alleviate anxiety

👉When is surgery necessary vs. when is RFA a good alternative?

👉The importance of patient advocacy, education, and getting a second opinion

👉Why access to RFA is still limited and may require travel
