  • Episode 15 | Carla Statham & Ryan Oldfield from TOTALMTB | Anxiety and Mountain Biking
    Jan 20 2023

I was thrilled to be able to speak with Carlos Statham, a big supporter of the Mountain bike community that is TotalMTB, and Ryan Oldfield, the founder of TotalMTB.

Carla has been suffering from terrible anxiety since a mountain bike crash in 2019, and she very courageously opens up about how difficult it was for her, and how mountain biking and total MTB have helped her.

There are several amazing things in the story, not least how difficult it was for her to have her concussion recognised by medical professionals, and to get the support that she needed. It's also a very important message that there is a hidden element of injury that often can get overlooked i.e. stress and anxiety.

Bear in mind that both Ryan and Carla suffer from terrible anxiety and so it was hugely brave of them to commit to doing the podcast and I think they did an awesome job.

Please listen in, and if you get the opportunity, please join the total MTB community. www.totalmtb.co.uk

  • Episode 13 | Getting Kids into Mountain Biking | Tips, Tricks and Money Saving advice
    Dec 9 2022

I chat with fanatical mountain biking dad Dave Ford about encouraging your children into mountain biking.

We discuss the merits of balance bikes versus stabilizers, whether to buy new or secondhand and why finding the right size bike has nothing to do with wheel-size as you might think.

We also chat about the safety equipment you should be looking out for and the one technique you must teach your child to ensure they are safe and happy.

oh, yes - we also agree that having a pocket full of sweets is essential to maintain morale and keep the tears away after the first crash.

If you've got young children and you're looking to get them into mountain biking then this is the podcast for you.

  • Episode 10 | DIRT FARM | What does it take to run a Mountain Bike park?
    Oct 19 2022
I was invited to chat with the lovely people who run DIRT FARM mountain bike centre in South Wales near Abergavenny. I met with Gwenda and Jo Binns who alongside Sean Bevan do an amazing job running the most welcoming mountain bike centre I've ever visited. I chat with them about the history of the farm and the recent rebranding from Black Mountain Cycle Centre [BMCC] to Dirt Farm and just what it takes day-to-day to run one of South Wales's most popular bike parks. This really is an amazing place for mountain bikers with an uplift service using trailers pulled by tractors to get you to the top of the multiple trials that suit everybody from beginner to advanced. There is a tremendous loyalty from the mountain bikers who visit here with many visiting multiple times a month and travelling up to 4 hours to get here. They also have a steady stream of visitors from abroad who want to enjoy what dirt farm has to offer. What came across most from the podcast was the sheer passion they all had to ensure that mountain bikers visiting the park have the best possible experience from groomed trails to a warm welcome from the owners to each and every person who arrives. Please visit their website, follow them on Instagram and most importantly get yourself down to DIRT FARM for a warm welcome and brilliant trails.

Graham has been in the mountain bike industry for over 35 years and launched his own range of Fat Bikes under the Smokestone name some years ago. I chat with Graham about his design considerations and the choices he's making from the ground up.
