The RV Flip, a marvel of marine engineering, stands as one of the most extraordinary research vessels ever built. Launched in 1962, it remains unique for its ability to transform from a horizontal ship into a vertical floating platform—a feat unmatched even today. This design, combined with its longevity and contributions to science, has cemented the Flip’s place in history.Measuring 108 meters in length and weighing 700 tons, the Flip can rotate 90 degrees to stand upright in the ocean. When in this position, the bow rises 17 meters above the waterline—equivalent to a five-story building—while 91 meters of its structure remains submerged. This configuration provides exceptional stability, allowing the vessel to endure waves up to 10 meters high with minimal disturbance. The transformation process takes approximately 30 minutes, during which seawater is pumped into ballast tanks to shift its orientation.
