Ralph finds that he is alone as Noggs does not return to work. Mr Cheeryble comes to visit and tells Ralph that soon he should come and see them as they have matters to discuss. Ralph discovers his associates have moved away from him and reluctantly goes to see the Cheerybles. They inform him what they know of his affairs. He is later confronted by Brooker who reveals his shadowy past and Ralph flees. The Nicklebys mourn Smike.

Nicholas and Kate also talk about their love for Madeline and Frank, but both agree it is best if they remain single. Ralph reflects on his life and past and takes drastic measures. The Cheerybles are invited to dinner, and three marriages are announced. Nicholas later decides to travel to Yorkshire, where he meets the Browdies and discovers what has happened to Dotheboys Hall. Nicholas and Kate’s fortunes change for the better.

My only criticism is that all the women sounded comic, but oh my, there are so many characters and Holdbrook-Smith made each distinct. Quite a feat.

Marvelously humorous reading

I have never so enjoyed an audio Dickens novel as much as this one and this is due to the brilliant narrator Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. He has made every single character distinctly different by tone and accent; very well acted too. He is a one man Royal Shakespeare Company! I can’t wait to look for other titles he has read for Audible. This is a must listen for any Dickens fan.

Amazing Narration by Kobna Holbrook-Smith

This isn’t one of Dickens’ best stories, but it’s still good, and I enjoy it. Unfortunately, I’ve been spoiled by listening to the free LibriVox version. That one is more accurately and appealingly narrated. This Audible version’s narration isn’t bad, but when a better one is available through a free service, that leads me to question why Audible, a paid business, didn’t put more effort into ensuring that the story was read accurately. In a couple of places, those who don’t already know the story will be confused by what’s said. This version is still worth listening to, though, if you want to avoid the commercials you’ll get on Librivox.

Good story but better narration is available elsewhere

This reader is fantastic, one of the best I’ve ever heard. The story is funny, sharp, with characters so well developed you won’t soon forget them. My favorite Dickens so far!

Excellent performance, great story!

One of the best readers of a Dicken’s novel I have ever encountered. The story is great, but Holdbrook-Smith renders it magnificent. I hope he performs more classics of British literature on Audible in the future.
