There is a beautiful hymn written by Martin Nystrom that begins, “As the deer pants for water so my soul longs after you”. It is a haunting melody that suits a flute and acoustic guitar in particular. The hymn tells of the thirst for the love of God that haunts every soul and, if not satisfied, creates a longing and pain worse than any dire thirst.

In the Genesis story heard today the ancient writers have provided us with material for meditation on the timeless questions of sin, rebellion, salvation and the unique nature of humanity being created in the image of God.
In the Gospel Matthew allows us to struggle with Jesus so that we all learn the truth. There are three parts to this ,‘one on one combat', like a martial arts black belt contest between skilled opponents. In reality, this is more like an inner struggle with Jesus looking for God’s answers as he sifts through all the voices he has heard......
