  • Ep 741 - Monk & Robot, by Becky Chambers
    Feb 9 2026

Usually when robots gain sentience in fiction, they rise up and slay or otherwise subjugate their human creators, but this week's book dares to imagine what might happen if they stood up, looked around, said "thanks but no thanks," and left. It also ponders the meaning of existence, just for good measure.

Monk & Robot collects two previously published novels: A Psalm for the Wild-Built and A Prayer for the Crown-Shy.

Three lives, all alike in indignity. Stein's debut book is a collection of stories about three working-class woman at the turn of the 20th century. In it, we see the beginnings of her unique literary voice - full of repetition, repetition, poetic vernacular, and repetition.

Mch of the time insightful, often hilarious, always entertaining. I can listen for hours a day. Some of the episodes are truly epic and some of them are just silly and fun. The variety of book selections is right up my alley. And I very much appreciate that Craig and Andrew never shy away from naming and exploring problematic themes (racism, sexism, abuse, etc) even in beloved classics and books they love. I've learned a lot listening to Overdue.
