This show is about what it was like to hike the AT in 2014 as a fat 61-year-old with zero hiking experience. Guests join me to share their stories and insights all the way from Georgia to Maine. At the end of each episode is a chapter from the latest hiking book that I'm reading.© Mighty Blue Publishing, 2023

  • Episode #509 - Chrissy and Ady Schubert
    Oct 2 2025
Chrissy Schubert and her daughter Ady will be attempting a 250-mile section of the Appalachian Trail next year. No big deal, you may think. Think again. Ady is afflicted by profound autism, communicates through writing, and has a heart as big as the trail itself. The adversity that Ady and her family have overcome during her earlier years has strengthened their faith and helped so many others along the way. These links each tell a short story or speak to the way in which Ady is triumphing in life as she faces her teenage years. It is worth checking them all out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Obk0wB7yDuI https://www.youtube.com/@adysbigarmy https://adysbigarmy.org/ https://adyhikes.org/ I used my hike last year on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I’ve been privileged to serve for over a decade. • Episode #508 - Woods Hole Weekend 2025
    Sep 25 2025
This week, we have a little change of pace. I attended the Woods Hole weekend last week as a presenter, and I came away with friendships, more knowledge, and a decent amount of humble pie as I savored the experience. My Dana came with me and experienced a little of what I experience on trail. She hiked into our campsite at Dismal Falls, then camped for her first ever night in a tent in the woods, before hiking back out the following morning. Our sessions at Woods Hole were informative, and we found a bunch of people ready to learn, to share, and to listen. We’re all lucky to be part of such a community. Last week was also the culmination of our Mighty BLue Class of 2025, as Beth and Andrew climbed Katahdin after finishing off the 100 Mile Wilderness. We reflected on those last days just yesterday. As you can see below, they took notice of me when I suggested that they should consider their Katahdin “pose” before they reached the brown sign. I used my hike last year on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I’ve been privileged to serve for over a decade. • Episode #507 - Glenn Sweitzer (Wanderer)
    Sep 18 2025
Glenn Sweitzer, designer and filmmaker, is our guest today. Glenn’s fascinating back story takes in working with Disney, designing artwork for Tim McGraw and others, then telling stories through film, before ending up on the Appalachian Trail, discovering and sharing stories along the way. Glenn is a natural raconteur with an eye for detail, and has produced an award-winning Appalachian Trail movie, Trail Mix, that is very evocative of my time out on trail, so there should be plenty for you all to enjoy as he hikes the trail and meets other storytellers along the way. Check out the trailer to Trail Mix here. Local Folk: Trail Mix - Finding Yourself on the Appalachian Trail Glenn has recognized the healing properties of trail hiking and has formed a 501c3 called the Trail Please Foundation, see that clip here. Trails Please Beth and Andrew are within spitting distance of Katahdin, well into the 100 Mile Wilderness, where they met a previous Might Blue Class of member, Bobby Campbell, or Sloggy. Here they are together. I used my hike last year on the South West Coast Path in the UK to help raise money for my absolute favorite charity, Parenting Matters, on whose board I’ve been privileged to serve for over a decade. Thank you for the podcasts. I am attempting the AT next February. I'll turn 60 on the trail and I'm overweight. Between listening to this podcast and your (Steve) story, I feel encouraged. I'm looking forward to listening to your other trail podcasts.
