This show is about what it was like to hike the AT in 2014 as a fat 61-year-old with zero hiking experience. Guests join me to share their stories and insights all the way from Georgia to Maine. At the end of each episode is a chapter from the latest hiking book that I'm reading.© Mighty Blue Publishing, 2026

  • Episode #531 - Crystal Crowder and William Nelson (Mosey and Sourpatch)
    Mar 5 2026
We have a husband and wife hiking duo on the show today. Mosey and Sourpatch hiked the Appalachian Trail last year, needing to get it done before Sourpatch's eye condition deteriorated further. On the way, they found purpose in several ways, with Mosey on the logistics as Sourpatch carried a bunch of military dog tags on to Katahdin. Summiting Katahdin on 9/11 with two previous guests of the podcast–Tony Roddy (Silverback) and Rob Diamond (Dog Tag)–gave extra meaning to their hike. You can check out their pictures from their hike and other adventures at (@advenutreswithcrystalandwill) • Instagram profile. Tristen Murphy, from the Hike the Good Hike cohort, returns to the show to tell us why she has switched the focus of her upcoming hike from the John Muir Trail. Find out where she's going now. Then, my latest accountability blog ties up a few loose ends as I prepare for my own thru-hike next Monday. Don't forget; you can follow me on my hike this year by going to Polarsteps.com/MightyBlue and clicking on the follow button. • Episode #530 - Tim Bennett (Porkie)
    Feb 26 2026
Tim Bennett, or Porkie, is today's guest. Tim had an epic adventure on the Long Trail in Vermont, sharing with us the family connection he has to the trail. It wasn't a straightforward hike, with serious injury and recovery, plus dramatic floods punctuating his efforts over two years. He remained resilient and completed his mission after his various mishaps. Tim also wrote a blog of his journey for the Trek, which you can read here at Tim Bennett, Author at The Trek . He has now written a book about both his and his father's hikes, which will be available later in the year. When I get that link, I'll put it in future show notes. For now, you can visit his website, http://www.longtrailhiker.com/ and sign up to be notified when the book is available. Ben Kaplan completed the lineup for the Hike the Good Hike cohort, as he talked about leading AMC winter hikes while finding solace in his solo outdoor adventures. • Episode #529 - Michael Neiman (Sharkbait)
    Feb 19 2026
Michael Neiman, who, along with Bruce Matson, brought us Platinum Blazing to the trail, is our guest this week. Michael thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2018, and his new book tells that story–as a 98% true novel. Michael, or Sharkbait has been juggling a job, parenthood, and his writing to bring this book to publication, and it's a good read, with plenty of page turning moments. You can check out the book at his website, Hello Neiman, or on Amazon at Hello My Name is Sharkbait: A 2,000-Mile Adventure on the Appalachian Trail. OR you could follow him on Instagram at Michael Neiman (@helloneiman) • Instagram profile. He even appeared on Minnesota local TV promoting his book, here:Hello My Name is Sharkbait on Minnesota's Fox 9 Good Day - December 22, 2025 Ezra Peterson, the last remaining member of the Hike the Good Hike cohort, shares his moving story of transitioning from a woman to a man, and he is feeding his joy of the outdoors by taking on a Fastest Known Time for a non-binary person in hiking the Superior Hiking Trail. He's quite self-deprecating in that there isn't currently a record in that category, but his refreshing attitude to a tricky subject shines through in our conversation. Finally today, the accountability blog takes us to within three weeks of my start on the Appalachian Trail. I've got everything I need, plus a few things I don't need, but I still haven't packed and tried out my darn pack!! Thank you for the podcasts. I am attempting the AT next February. I'll turn 60 on the trail and I'm overweight. Between listening to this podcast and your (Steve) story, I feel encouraged. I'm looking forward to listening to your other trail podcasts.
