This show is about what it was like to hike the AT in 2014 as a fat 61-year-old with zero hiking experience. Guests join me to share their stories and insights all the way from Georgia to Maine. At the end of each episode is a chapter from the latest hiking book that I'm reading.© Mighty Blue Publishing, 2026

  • Episode #524 - Todd Sears (Nor'Easter)
    Jan 15 2026
We meet a member of the Class of 2012 this week, who happens also to be a member of this years class of 2026. In fact, Todd Sears is starting the day after I start, in March this year. He had a long career in military intelligence, and brings a military discipline to his hike, both back in 2012 and in his plans for this year. I should be meeting him very early on as he will doubtless breeze past me at speed. You can read about his earlier hike from a blog that he wrote; Nor'easter's 2012 Appalachian Trail Journal : March 20, 2011 : Trail Journals, Backpacking and Hiking Journals. To compare his hiking and his writing back then, you should check out the Tek, as Todd is one of their trail correspondents this year; NorEaster, Author at The Trek We start our season of Hike the Good Hike participants for 2026 with Elizabeth Thompson, who has endured both domestic abuse and cancer in recent years. She is hiking the PCT and our conversation became quite emotional. You can keep up with Elizabeth on Instagram at (@footstepsandforests) • Instagram profile , and on YouTube at elizabeth With just eight weeks to go before I head out, I share some mildly disappointing news about my gear, and some encouraging news about my protein intake!! Michelle Michaud is our guest today. She has completed the Appalachian Trail three times, having been on trail every year since the late 90s.

Her love for the AT is apparent, and she has managed to parlay that love into a business, helping hikers with their logistics and training as they try to fulfill their own Appalachian Trail dream.

Also today, Michael Glavin, the inventor and owner of Zenbiy, with the Zenbivy sleep system, helps Steve make up his mind for the final big purchase for his upcoming Appalachian Trail thru-hike. Check out their site at https://zenbivy.com/

Finally, the accountability blog turns to the subject of food.

  • Episode #522 - Dr Rob Scanlon
    Jan 1 2026

We welcome Dr Rob Scanlon to the podcast today to talk about five essential skills that hikers need to learn to avoid becoming a depressing statistic on trail.

Rob shares anecdotes and data to illustrate those five skills, and he has presented a book rich in detail that will benefit most hikers. I'll certainly be paying attention to several of the points Rob makes in his book as I hit the Appalachian Trail this year.

You can follow Rob on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/dr_robscanlon?igsh=bTRxMTdoNzl4YTN6&utm_source=ig_contact_invite , and you can find his book on Amazon at https://a.co/d/dFW1wBj .

In my accountability blog this week, I introduce you all to a new diet that I'll be starting next week. Watch this space!

Thank you for the podcasts. I am attempting the AT next February. I'll turn 60 on the trail and I'm overweight. Between listening to this podcast and your (Steve) story, I feel encouraged. I'm looking forward to listening to your other trail podcasts.
