    After weeks of intensifying drought and near-constant fire danger, Nebraska may finally see a stretch of moisture this week, but experts warn it likely won’t be enough to reverse rapidly deteriorating conditions. State climatologist Eric Hunt says Nebraska has gone more than 10 days without measurable precipitation and over three weeks without meaningful moisture, helping drive that expansion.

    Nebraska is facing a historic wildfire season as extreme drought, high winds, and record-breaking temperatures fuel fires across the state. Through mid-March, more than 827,000 acres have burned, shattering the previous annual record set during the 2012 drought year. The Morrill Fire alone has consumed over 643,000 acres, surpassing the previous statewide record for an entire year, while three other active fires have burned tens of thousands more, according to the Nebraska State Climate Office. Experts warn that fire danger will remain high as dry, windy conditions persist.
