  • Episode #129 Choosing Your Identity
    Apr 9 2026

Who do you think you are? And who gets to decide?

This week on the podcast we're talking about identity- the thoughts you think about yourself and the power they have over your experience of being the only one.

Based on what I see inside Be The First, too many of you are walking around with identities that don't serve you. Perhaps those identities are inherited. Sometimes they are adopted. Other times they are imposed or have simply accumulated.

But the one I see most often is the identity of being the Only One.

How you think about yourself in the room isn't just important. It's your whole experience. Not just how you feel. But how you behave. How you perform. And your readiness to step up to the next level. It's the difference between doing just enough to survive in this industry and being the black lawyer who thrives in this industry. Not just inside the office. But in your relationships and personal life too.

Something this important can't be left to chance. And it doesn't have to be. You can choose your identity and I recommend you start making that choice now.

if you're a black lawyer, whatever your career stage, this is exactly the work we do inside the Be The First Membership. In it you will get immediate access to the Identity Course where you explore 5 core aspects of your identity and shape these into an empowering speech - The Imposter Speech - to override self doubt in the moment and give you the confidence to show up at your highest level.

  • Episode #128 Own Your Feedback
    Apr 2 2026

I'm hearing too many stories of you not getting the feedback you need to motivate you, confirm you're meeting expectations and support your progression to the next level.

Working for partners or line managers who communicate badly (or not at all) or who constantly postpone or cut short your review isn't just frustrating, it's unacceptable.

    It's also career threatening.

Feedback that is consistently unforthcoming or unclear, or is too little and arrives too late, has far too often been the critical factor in your decision to head for or worse, be shown, the door.

But feeling powerless in the face of inadequate feedback should never be what derails your career.

You've worked too hard, for too long, and been through way too much for that.

That's why in this week's episode of the Legal Imposters podcast I help you change that.

In it I explain why you must stop leaving your feedback to chance (having a line manager who takes it seriously and does it well) and take ownership of that feedback yourself. I also give you a 3 step process for actioning this advice right now, the minute you finish listening to the podcast.

If your brain is rebelling against making feedback your job, it's not alone! This is hard coaching. One of my client's immediate reaction to this inside Be the First was "why should I be the one?!".

    I get it.

But why should they be the ones to derail your career?

Taking ownership of your feedback isn't letting your boss off the hook. In fact, it isn't about them at all. It's about you: in the driving seat of your career so no one person's neglect can come between you the career you want to build and the life you want to live.

    Happy listening.

P.S. Taking ownership of your feedback is harder when you depend on external validation to believe you're enough. If you're a black lawyer and this is you, I invite you to join the Be The First Membership, where you learn to overcome Imposter Syndrome and build confidence in who you are, so you can be brilliant at what you do. • Episode #127 How to Articulate Your Value
    Mar 26 2026

It isn't enough to be valuable. You must be able to articulate that value and communicate it in a language the leadership understands.

    Here's what I see:

    1. You present a history of the work you've done and deals you've closed ("Look at everything I've done for this firm") and tell yourself it should be enough. But entitlement doesn't get you promoted. Value does.
    2. You work diligently with your head down and hope someone will notice and give you the role. ("They can see I'm a safe pair of hands"). But hope doesn't get you the role. Value does.
    3. You work hard with your head high and make it someone else's job to connect the dots. ("I shouldn't have to spell it out!"). But expectation doesn't get you promoted. Value does.

Whether you're preparing your business case for promotion to partner, interviewing for a new role today or looking for a permanent role at the end of your training contract, the message is the same: don't leave it to others to work out the value of what you do. Show them.

If your next thought is "yes Caroline, but how?" you're in the right place.

This week on Legal Imposters I'm giving you a framework for articulating your value and communicating it with ease so you never leave your promotion or retention to chance again.

This is the exact same framework I teach my mid to senior and partner clients inside Be The First to build their business case for promotion and build their book of business. Apply this framework as directed and it will do the same for you.

  • Episode #126 Taking Risks
    Mar 18 2026

If you want the reward, you have to be willing to risk.

Right now, the fear of failure, of getting it wrong, of not knowing the answer, of letting people down - these are risks you're avoiding which are holding you back in your career.

They're why you're not applying for that new exciting role (which has your name written all over it and which you are already 80% qualified for).

They're why you're not contributing your ideas and perspective to meetings even though you have value to add.

Even though these are essential for your progression, the perceived risk of failure feels too high.

As a black lawyer being cautious and risk avoidant is to be expected.

The higher standards you're held to, the scrutiny you face and bias you encounter make it difficult to act before you're absolutely certain you'll succeed.

And therein lies the problem. There IS no certainty. No guarantee of success. No promise you'll avoid failure. So if you want to achieve the objectives of being great at what you do, being included, winning support, showcasing your value and ensuring you are retained or promoted, you must build your tolerance to risk and be willing to entertain more of it.

I show you how to do this in this week's episode.

In it I explain why waiting to be 100% ready is one of the secret signs of Imposter Syndrome that are holding you back in your career and how one of the ways to overcome this is to be willing to take the risk.

I reveal the limitations of avoiding risk altogether and the dangers of relying on others to create safety for you.

Then, I share a process for creating your own safety so you can increase your tolerance and take the risks that are necessary so you can bring in more rewards.

    Happy listening.

P.S. Inside the Be The First Membership we investigate your Imposter Syndrome and make it your strength. I walk you step by step through the process for creating your Imposter Speech, so you always know what to tell yourself to overcome Imposter Syndrome in the moment so it never holds you back again. And you won't be doing this alone. You'll join a growing community of black lawyers on the same journey, learning, celebrating and supporting each other to thrive at every level. Doors to the membership open 1st May. Save this date. Keep listening for details.

  • Episode #125 Massive Action
    Mar 11 2026

What if, instead of giving yourself a week, 6 months, a year to complete that project or accomplish that goal, you could achieve it in half the time?

This week on Legal Imposters I'm introducing you to Massive Action - a tool I've been using in my business to generate the momentum, focus, energy and courage to bring my vision for the Be The First Membership to life. Not in a year, which is the timeframe my brain wants to set to avoid the fears that achieving this goal brings up. I'm using it to achieve this goal in half the time.

And it's effectiveness is blowing my mind.

Massive Action is the level of action you need to take to accomplish a goal or task in less time than you reasonably expect it to take. What makes this tool so valuable, is its ability to cut through the fears that are the real reasons behind your procrastination and why tasks take you so long to achieve.

Last October, when I asked myself how long I thought I needed to build and open the Be The First Membership, my brain offered me "at least a year!". Taking into account the scale of what I want to build, the meatiness of the sub-tasks involved, my already packed coaching and speaking schedule plus the many hats I wear as a business owner, this seemed entirely reasonable.

But I saw this timeframe for the procrastination it was: a secret sign of Imposter Syndrome that is holding me back from my potential to produce more in less time.

So I challenged myself to pick a shorter timeframe.l I identified the real reason behind my procrastination (the fear of failure, of being found out). Then I committed to feeling that fear NOW (instead of a year from now) and getting to work. As a result I'm on track to bring the Be The First Membership to life in half the time I anticipated.

The results I'm creating with Massive Action are blowing my mind.

Massive Action can do the same for you.

    Tune in to discover how.

  • Episode #124 Rising to the Challenge
    Mar 4 2026

As long as you are setting goals, wanting to progress, seeking to grow -there will always be that moment when it feels so hard that every bone in your body is screaming at you to give up.

What you do in this moment is everything.

It's not the obstacle that defines your success or failure in achieving the goal. It's your ability to rise to the challenge it presents so that, instead of marking the end of the road, it signals your moment of triumph.

This is the pivotal moment, the part of the journey you remember as the moment you dug deep and found the strength and resilience to keep going, It's the How of How did I get here? that is so integral to your new identity as the person who achieved your goal.

This week on Legal Imposters we're talking about what this resilience looks like and how to find it when that time comes. It's not strategy. It isn't even a skill or tool. It's pure mindset. And it's the most important quality of all.

    Happy listening.

  • Episode #123 The Imposter Identity
    Feb 25 2026

How is your relationship with Imposter Syndrome?

The deeper this relationship, the more you will value yourself, the better you will show up to your work and the more others will value you.

My relationship with Imposter Syndrome used to be terrible.

I carried Imposter Syndrome around like a secret shame, determined to hide it, desperate to get rid of it. Certain that as long as I had it, I would never achieve my potential.

I tried every trick in the book to break free from it. Still, nothing worked. Not in a sustainable way. Not in a way that changed the way I felt when I had to speak up in meetings or when I sat down to tackle a hard task.

Then one day instead of fighting it, I stopped and decided to investigate it. That's when I saw the value in it. That's how I discovered it was my strength.

Now my relationship with Imposter Syndrome couldn't be more different.

I'm proud to call myself an Imposter. It emboldens me and empowers me. It supports me and holds me. It elevates and distinguishes me. I succeed because of it, not in spite of it.

Imposter Syndrome is no longer something I have. It's fundamental to who I am.
