  • How To Fix Youth Sports with Greg Olsen
    Sep 9 2025

Being a parent in youth sports is… a lot. One day you’re cheering on your kid for picking clovers in the outfield, the next you’re asking yourself: “Is my kid… special?” and googling special clinics in the area. We’ve been through the highs and lows, and that’s why we were so excited to sit down with former NFL All-Pro and award-winning broadcaster Greg Olsen in today’s show. Greg is on a mission to make youth sports healthier and more balanced through his platform Youth Inc. He knows both sides of the game: he was part of that 0.02% who actually made it to the pros, and now he’s a dad coaching kids in today’s pressure-packed youth leagues.

We talk about what’s broken (spoiler: it’s mostly us parents), how to keep sports fun for kids, and what Greg would do if he were the “czar” of youth sports. He also shares how he personally dealt with career setbacks (yes, even after Super Bowls and broadcast booths), and why the real goal in sports isn’t the scholarship or the contract—it’s the process of showing up and growing. Stay tuned for Penn’s Top 5 Changes to Youth Sports at the end. Maybe you’ll start keeping Penn points for your kids games! We love to hear from you, leave us a message at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. You can also watch our podcast on YouTube.

  • College Drop Off Reflections & Distractions
    Sep 2 2025

Oh friends, we did it. We officially dropped our daughter off at college, and let me tell you—it was a rollercoaster of emotions I wasn’t totally prepared for. From the frantic week of packing command strips and last-minute Target runs, to the heartbreaking last night at home when both kids ended up crying in our bed, this season of life has been full of tears, laughter, and a whole lot of love.

In this episode, Penn and I share what those first few days after drop-off really felt like (Spoiler: I “took to the bed” for two days in the words of Leanne Morgan), the random little things that triggered my tears (like buying three airline tickets instead of four), and how our community’s comments and calls reminded me that healthy birds leave the nest. We also talk about the surprising perks of this new stage of life and the silly distractions that are helping us cope, from cookie cakes and dance classes to discovering the world’s greatest ’90s radio station.

Most of all, this conversation is about feeling everything—the joy, the loss, the pride, and the love. If you’ve been through a college drop-off (or are bracing for one), I hope our reflections—and a few laughs—make you feel a little less alone. Also a giant hug to our community here on Laugh Lines that wrote us the nicest notes and left the sweetest voicemails. Thank you so much. We love to hear from you, leave us a message at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. You can also watch our podcast on YouTube.

  • Unhinged ADHD Tips & Differences In Women with Dr. Amelia Kelley
    Aug 26 2025

If you’ve ever screamed “I TOOK MY MEDICINE!” just to remember you actually took it—then you’re in good company with today's episode. Today on Laugh Lines, Penn and I share some of the most unhinged (and surprisingly brilliant) ADHD hacks from our listeners, the internet, and our own chaotic household. We also sit down with Dr. Amelia Kelley, author of Powered by ADHD, who helps us untangle why ADHD so often hides in plain sight—especially in women.

I’ll be honest: parts of this conversation got personal for me. I found myself recognizing symptoms I’ve always chalked up to hormones or “just anxiety,” and it was emotional to wonder if maybe I’ve been missing something all along. (Do Penn and I both have ADHD?) We talk about how ADHD can present as anxiety and all the masking women do that hinders their diagnosis. Sometimes the most important thing isn’t having all the answers—it’s realizing you’re not alone in how you feel.

So come laugh with us about apron-tight cooking hacks and stick around while we unpack under-diagnosed ADHD in women. We also take some great Laugh Line calls and define a Gen Z slang from a listener suggestion. We love to hear from you, leave us a message at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. You can also watch our podcast on YouTube.

Fantastic! A much needed conversation

This podcast is so relatable and fun to listen to. There are moments of hilarity but there are also moments of deep emotion. Thought-provoking and fun, great for listening on my walks, while I'm cooking, in the car, and even with my kids (sometimes). Family and relationship thoughts, experiences, and advice.

I love listening to this podcast. So relatable!

I'm not one of those people who can do my work AND listen to a podcast at the same time, which is a real shame because I really enjoy podcasts ... so ever since I started listening to your podcast, my work has begun to suffer. That should be a star or two off but my boss isn't the one writing this review, so ..........

In the latest episode (re: hobbies), I have to say that you are the only other person I have heard who discusses a strong dislike for the word "should". I went through a phase (may still be going through it) where I would respond to all shoulds with an accusation toward the speaker of being a "should-pusher". It doesn't endear me to people, but just know that I get it and I'm glad that you spoke about it because now I don't feel so weird. Right?

So, yea, keep getting in between me and my work - I enjoy it, even if my boss may not.

Pausing work to listen to y'all

It's been a rough year, but I gotta say, stumbling upon the Holderness Family has been one of my favorite parts. I first saw their hilarious song parodies on Facebook a couple of months ago. I was very excited to see they were writing a book, which is how I found out about the podcast! I laugh, and sometimes cry, but I always learn a little something, and get to see things from a new angle. As a newlywed, I strive to have a relationship like Kim and Penn have as the years go by. I love that they share the tools that help them have such an incredible understanding of each other! Thank you so much for being you, and sharing so much of yourselves!

I just love this family!

I really enjoyed your videos and now your podcast. We have learned so much about the experience of living with ADHD from Penn. My son is ADHD and has been able to relate to Penn. Having a family of ADHD (myself, son, and husband) we feel for Kim because it's hard sometimes, but she has such a great approach to understanding it.

Loving the positivity and wellness

First off let me say I love you guys. Second I can not belive I am the first review on here. That can only be because everyone else has already started listening to you on other platforms, because you guys are great I actually started watching dude dad and came across The target husband's video and I discovered your family's videos and I was hooked from there. I have watched all your videos, "read" your book. Wich I am great full for the extra commentary on the audiobook and now for the past couple of days I have been listening to your podcast im up to the end of 2018. I listen to you ten hours a day while I'm at work. My wife and I both have a mixture of both your personalities and you have helped me understand not only my wife but myself. With your inspiration I have started down my own self help and personal growth journey. Keep it up and I can not wait to catch up on your podcast Thank you for everything you guys do. YOUR AMAZING

Okay, I love Penn & Kim, but this speaker was just next level with the knowledge. I think the only thing I didn't like about it is that he stole the show, but I will definitely be listening to this one multiple times. Great job! So glad I could find him through you! :)

By far, the best episode!

Thanks for this. I started listening to you both during the pandemic. I don't listen to podcasts often but am on a long road trip and so glad I started listening! Besides the content being g great, I realized that they are sponsored by Betterhelp which is ironic as I am a therapist with Better help and have recommended your content to clients with ADHD without knowing that they sponsored your Podcast. Keep up the great work!

gratitude and positivity!
