This week's guest is none other than Emmy-winning Joshua Rubin. He is a writer, producer, director, and veteran of the entertainment industry, with 20 years of experience in Film, TV, Video Games, and XR. Joshua is best known for co-writing Assassin's Creed 2, and for his work as part of the core creative team at Bungie responsible for building the world of Destiny. Recently, Joshua was Lead Writer on OUTRIDERS. These days he is kept busy as the Chief Creative Officer at Subverse Narrative Consulting, working with studios and experience makers around the world.
In this episode, we dig into, amongst other things:
- How Joshua found his way from Hollywood to video games,
- What it is like doing story consulting work on other companies' games,
- Keys to engaging dialogue and the importance of consequences,
- How branching narrative IS the gameplay in RPGs,
- Working on Destiny (including Joshua's story about Dead Ghosts and how they helped him find joy in his work),
- Outriders and world-building,
- The importance of stories in helping people escape and explore other worlds, and
- Developing your bullshit detector so you can write better games!
