    Cowdenin nelihenkinen perhe lähti viettämään Labor Day-viikonloppua heille entuudestaan tutulle retkeilyalueelle vuonna 1974. Perheen äidin, Belindan, oma äiti alkoi ihmetellä kun perhe ei ilmestynyt hänen luokse illalliselle retken päätteeksi, kuten oli sovittu. Seitsemän kuukautta perheen katoamisen jälkeen mysteeri ratkesi osittain.

    Ann Heron murhattiin omassa kodissaan keskellä päivää Englannin Darlingtonissa vuonna 1990. Rikoksen tutkiminen oli alusta asti vaikeaa, vaikka jo viikko tapahtuneen jälkeen poliiseilla oli tiedossa epäilty, joka myös myöhemmin pidätettiin. Poliisia on alusta asti mietityttänyt, ovatko lukuisat Annin kodin lähistöllä murhapäivänä tehdyt havainnot luotettavia, ja voisivatko ne olla avainasemassa jutun ratkaisemiseksi.     Lokakuussa 1994 Susan Smith soitti hätäkeskukseen ja kertoi, että hänelle entuudestaan tuntematon mies oli kaapannut hänen autonsa, jonka sisällä olivat myös kaksi hänen pientä lastaan. Susanin puhelusta alkoi laaja poliisitutkinta ja mediahuomio, johon kukaan ei osannut varautua. Lopulta poliisit pääsivät Susanin ristiriitaisen kertomuksen perusteella oikean syyllisen jäljille melko nopeasti.
