Rescue flights of Israelis have begun, bringing home thousands a day, but estimates are that 100,000 or more are stranded overseas. Many tourists in Israel and Israelis with business overseas have left via the Taba crossing, but many are still stuck. What’s it like for Americans who are not used to the realities of war being in Israel when the war began with missiles, rockets and drones raining down on Israel, daily, several or more times a day, sending people to bomb shelters at all hours? What’s it like for Israelis to be stranded away from home, away from their families, away from the war?

For many readers and theologians, the Old and New Testaments (Tanach and the Christian bible) feel disconnected. It’s something that has been an element driving replacement theology. They may be full of inspiration and meaning, but viewed as parallel, and often unrelated. Or, for some, the original replaced by and no longer significant. The writers of the New Testament were all observant Jews so many hints and references in their writing have clear connection to the Tanach which was the only bible they new and studied. Recently, the “Patriarchs and Heads of the Churches in Jerusalem” issued a joint statement explicitly condemning Christian Zionism as a harmful and damaging ideology. Their statement accuses local individuals who promote it of misleading public opinion, sowing confusion, and undermining the unity of the Church. The statement further states, “The Patriarchs and Heads of Churches further note with concern that these individuals have been welcomed at official levels both locally and internationally.” It's ironic that days earlier, Christian leaders throughout Israel were welcomed and celebrated by Israel’s head of state, President Herzog, at the President’s residence, hosted with honor and respect. Does this statement poke the president in the eye, and undermine the very existence of the State of Israel? Is Christian Zionism harmful and damaging? What is the theological basis of such a declaration? Why are there so many Christians who embrace Zionism, from the 19th century? Why was the statement issued now, and who is behind it? What does it mean that Zionism was singled out as problematic, but Israel was not mentioned once?
