  • with Fashion Designer, Activist & Political Artist Katharine Hamnett
    Apr 28 2023

In this episode of Frankly Speaking with Lynne Franks, Lynne is joined by her long time friend of 53 years, fashion designer, activist and political artist, Katharine Hamnett. Katharine is the inventor of the slogan t-shirt, an icon of the 1980's, and an early champion of sustainability in the fashion industry. She has influenced both British popular culture and politics through the strength of her work.

Breaking rules of the conventions of the fashion industry, there was always something new and exciting going on when Lynne and Katharine worked together. At a time when she was the most copied fashion designer of the time, she decided to create t-shirts with large type slogans like the now famous “ Choose Life” t-shirt, hoping that the messages would be spread far and wide.

“Make the words so big you can’t not see them from a distance. Then when you read them, you’ve had it. The words are inside your brain, and you’ve got no defences.” Katharine Hamnett

Listen as they discuss the origins of the now famous slogan t-shirts, her confrontation with Margaret Thatcher, her work championing the organic cotton trade, and her recent work with Help Refugees and We Are The Future.

To learn more about Katharine Hamnett for the UN Global Goals go here where you can also watch the music video.

  • Learning from the Wisdom of the Bees with Paula Carnell on World Bee Day
    May 20 2022

In this special World Bee day episode of Frankly Speaking with Lynne Franks and Friends, Lynne is joined by her friend “Bee Queen” Paula Carnell. They discuss her personal journey into beekeeping and the wisdom of bees we can all use to enrich our lives and the world around us.

Paula Carnell first started her own business in 1990 as an artist, greeting card publisher and eventually her own gallery. Exhibiting globally her paintings sold for 5 figures. Then after 20 years she fell ill and became bed and wheelchair bound with Ehlers Danlos syndrome. During her ‘cocoon’ phase, her husband built her a beehive and bees moved in. Following her remarkable full recovery using herbal medicine and plant based minerals, Paula then re-emerged ‘creating a buzz about health’, sharing the wisdom gained from bees and understanding the connection between our own health and theirs. Trained in Bologna as a Honey Sommelier, Paula works with organisations worldwide who want to work with bees and honey in a sustainable, naturopathic way, often thinking ‘outside the box’.

After the interview Lynne shares this week's Seed exercise, encouraging listeners to research bees and their prominence in ancient goddess culture.
