Hello everyone, welcome! Let’s take some time to learn from the book of Esther. I will begin by reading a couple of scriptures from the book of Esther chapter 3, verses 5 and 6, ‘When Haman saw that Mordecai did not bow or pay homage to him, Haman was filled with fury. So, he disdained to lay hands on Mordecai alone, as they had told him who the people of Mordecai were. Haman sought to destroy all the Jews, the people of Mordecai throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus.’ We see a person by the name of Haman. Haman was an influential man. We understand that he was second in position after the king. So, he is a very powerful individual. We also observe his character or his attitude. There is another person by the name of Mordecai and we know he is a relative and mentor of Esther, the queen. Just because Mordecai didn’t bow down to him, Haman decided to kill Mordecai. It is interesting that somebody of that stature and authority was upset because a particular man didn’t bow down to him. It shows great insecurity. Haman should have been very happy in the position and prestige that he already carried. Why did it matter to him that someone didn’t bow down to him? It reveals ego, pride and hatred because Haman hated the people represented by Mordecai. We know that towards the end of the book that God turned the entire story around. So, instead of Mordecai who was planned to be killed, it was Haman who was killed on the gallows. How did that happen? We know that God is a God of justice and one thing that He hates is pride and we see the display of pride in the life of Haman and because of this, there was destruction. Another great example of pride and the destruction that follows in lucifer himself. We know how lucifer rebelled along with the angels in heaven and was filled with pride. We see that many times when we study the scriptures that lucifer stated that I will ascend... I will become greater than God... but pride brought the downfall. In the same way, we see pride in the life of Haman which brought his downfall. It is a great lesson for us to check pride, our motives and always ask the question, why we are doing what we are doing and to ensure there is no pride in us. Let’s pray and ask God to help us in this area. Heavenly Father, we thank you that you have called us to display the fruit of the Spirit and to never yield to the works of the flesh. We pray today that you will protect us and help us to never walk in pride. Thank you for teaching us that pride brings destruction and we pray that we will continue from strength to strength and glory to glory and that we would never entertain pride in our hearts, in Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
