A flight engineer on an Eastern Airlines flight from Atlanta to Miami was surprised to find a uniformed crew member already sitting at his seat. The stranger said, “You don’t need to worry about the pre-flight.” Then the man simply vanished. The engineer had recognized the stranger. It was Don Repo. Repo was dead. The 52-year-old flight engineer was one of 101 people who’d died on Dec. 29, 1972 when Eastern Flight 401, packed with holiday travellers, slammed into the Everglades 19 miles northwest of Miami International Airport. Only 75 survived. At the time, it was the nation’s deadliest single-plane accident. Investigators later determined that while the crew was distracted with a front landing gear, the Lockheed L-1011-1 Tristar quietly coasted to its destruction.©2022 ©2022 T.V.
