Episode 21: Tylenol Murders

In 1982 Tylenol was the absolute leader in the painkiller field, outselling the next four leading painkillers combined. Tylenol was the most successful over-the-counter product in the United States with over one hundred million users. Accounting for 13 percent of Johnson & Johnson's year-to-year sales growth and 33 percent of the company's year-to-year profit growth at the time. However that all came in a horrific end in the fall of 1982 when people in the Chicago area started dropping dead after taking extra strength Tylenol.
