Episode 185: Liz Allan, Jane Lanceley and Amy Howells - Rethinking Heat: Practical, Low-Carbon Solutions That Work Anywhere.

Liz Allan is joined by Jane Lanceley, the Domestic Sales Manager, and Amy Howells, the Business Development Manager, from Herschel Infrared Heaters, for a refreshingly practical conversation about low-carbon heating and what it actually takes to make it work in the real world.

Together, they explore why heating is never a one-size-fits-all solution, from single rooms in domestic homes through to complex commercial environments and even historic buildings like churches. The discussion brings to life how understanding heat loss, insulation, and how a space is actually used is far more important than simply choosing a technology.

The conversation also touches on the role of policy, the need for broader recognition of alternative low-carbon technologies, and the flexibility now available through everything from simple thermostats to fully app-controlled systems.

    Quote of the Episode:
"We've got a huge amount of experience in heating all sorts of different applications… we can pretty much heat anything." Jane Lanceley

    Jane Lanceley Bio:
Jane Lanceley has spent over a decade helping customers understand and adopt low-carbon heating solutions. Her career has taken a varied, people-focused path, from working in HR to running a baby-signing franchise, and later moving into estate agency. She initially joined Herschel in an administrative role, but quickly found a natural fit speaking with customers about the product and its real-world applications. Over time, this evolved into a sales leadership role, in which she now combines technical expertise with a practical, customer-first approach.

    Amy Howells Bio:
Amy Howells brings a strong background in customer-facing roles across manufacturing and lighting. After studying sociology and criminology at university, Amy moved into sales and has built her career through a range of regional and business development roles. Amy focuses on understanding individual needs and helping customers find the right solution for their space. Her approach is centred on building trust, simplifying decisions, and making low-carbon heating solutions feel accessible and relevant.

  • Episode 184 Liz Allan and Ryan McGibbon - Building Fairer EV Charging for Every Resident
    Mar 17 2026

Episode 184 Liz Allan and Ryan McGibbon - Building Fairer EV Charging for Every Resident.

Liz Allan is joined by Ryan McGibbon, EV Infrastructure Manager at Southwark Council, for an insightful and refreshingly honest conversation about what it really takes to deliver EV charging that works for everyone.

Ryan shares his journey from electrical apprentice to leading one of London's most proactive local authority EV charging programmes. With nearly two decades of experience in electrical infrastructure and public services, Ryan brings a strong focus on people, residents, and practical delivery to the EV transition.

Liz and Ryan discuss how Southwark Council has built one of the UK's largest borough charging networks, with over 1,800 charge points already installed, largely through lamp-post charging solutions and concession partnerships. Ryan also explains why the council is now developing an owner-operator model, enabling the authority to keep charging affordable rates for residents and reinvesting revenue into the network.

    Quote of the Episode:
"Without our residents, we as a service do not exist. If we want people to transition to EVs, we must make charging affordable and accessible for everyone."
    Ryan McGibbon

    Ryan McGibbon Bio:
Ryan McGibbon is the EV Infrastructure Manager at Southwark Council, where he leads the development and delivery of the borough's public EV charging strategy.

Starting his career as an electrical apprentice, Ryan spent 16 years at Lewisham Council before moving to Southwark, where he initially managed the street lighting and highway electrical teams. Today, he oversees one of London's largest municipal charging networks and is driving innovative approaches to affordable EV charging, including owner-operator models, cross-pavement solutions and estate-based charging infrastructure.

Ryan is passionate about public service, mentoring apprentices, and delivering infrastructure that benefits residents, particularly those who might otherwise struggle to transition to electric vehicles.
