E001 – The First People in the Americas

Recent history – that is, sometime after the advent of writing – is easy to find and work through. But anything before that is difficult.

To get anything done, first you need to find evidence in the wild. That means a lot of digging – often for something that's about the size of your phone, or smaller, and buried deep in the ground.

Then need to make sure you don't break it, that no one disturbs it accidentally, and that you document it in situ (in the original place, meaning if you find something, your first priority is to take a lot of pictures, measure it, document it, and possibly get another expert on the site to look it over).

Beyond stories passed through generations – which are as good as anything in terms of evidence of prerecorded history – this is how archaeology gets done, and how we've found the evidence we do have for the first people in the Americas. And because of the difficulty involved, we're not really sure WHO was first. We have some guesses, but that's about the best we can do.
