On Christmas Eve 2002, 27-year-old Laci Peterson—eight months pregnant—disappeared from her Modesto, California home. When her body and that of her unborn son washed ashore in San Francisco Bay months later, her husband Scott was arrested, convicted, and sentenced to death for their murders.

The case seemed straightforward: Scott was having an affair, didn't want to be a father, and killed his family to start fresh. He acted guilty—emotionless at vigils, lying to his mistress, fleeing toward Mexico with dyed hair and cash. America watched and agreed: he did it.

But twenty-two years later, the Los Angeles Innocence Project has taken on his case, presenting an 854-page petition filled with new evidence that challenges everything. New scientific analysis suggests Laci died days after Scott's alibi. Witnesses who saw her alive after he left were never heard. A burglary across the street—dismissed at trial—may be directly connected. A van with a bloody mattress was found burning nearby and never investigated. Physical evidence was destroyed. DNA was never tested.

So did Scott Peterson murder his pregnant wife? Or is an innocent man serving life in prison while the real killer walks free?
