Crime is so commonplace that it takes something particularly shocking to be labelled the “crime of the century.” Even so, there are a lot of cases that have earned the distinction. In each episode of Crimes of the Centuries, award-winning journalist Amber Hunt will examine a case that’s lesser known today but was huge when it happened. The cases explored span the centuries and each left a mark. Some made history by changing laws. Others were so shocking they changed society.Amber Hunt Biografías y Memorias Ciencias Sociales Crímenes Reales Mundial

  • S5 Ep29: The Prophet of Kirtland, Part 1: The Birth of a Cult
    Oct 5 2025
In 1980s Ohio, Jeffrey Lundgren wasn’t just studying scripture — he was twisting it into something dangerous. To outsiders, he was a soft-spoken tour guide at a historic church site. But behind closed doors, Lundgren was preaching a radical new theology, gathering followers and slowly convincing them that he spoke for God. His target? The Kirtland Temple — once the holiest site in the Latter Day Saint movement.

  • S5 Ep28: Can You Ever Forgive Me? The Literary Forgeries of Lee Israel
    Sep 29 2025
For a brief, dazzling moment in early 1990s New York, biographer Lee Israel became one of the most notorious literary forgers of all time. Out of money, out of friends, and with a sick cat to care for, Israel turned her biographer’s research skills and her sharp wit toward a new craft: fabricating letters from Dorothy Parker, Noël Coward, Louise Brooks, and more. Her forgeries fooled collectors, corrupted archives and spread into the market as “authentic” pieces of history.

  • S5 Ep27: The Real Goodfellas Job
    Sep 22 2025
It was the score of all scores: a $6 million haul in cash and jewels lifted from JFK Airport in 1978. The headlines called it the Lufthansa heist; Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas turned it into legend. But the real story was messier: dozens of suspects, no recovered loot, and a trail of bodies that grew almost as fast as the FBI’s frustration.

Stumbled across this podcast last fall and binged the first two seasons. Have been waiting with bated breath for the third! Each show is fascinating and the host does an amazing job. I'm impressed with the research that goes in and her citing of sources.

So glad you're back!

interesting

I would love more. The only (small) complaint I have is that when they do their advertising the change in voices is kind of jarring. But the stories seem well researched, it's interesting, I like listening.

I love the narration of these stories. While it is clear that she does have normal emotions, she's not trying to imbue the facts of the story with her personal feeling aside for the times where she specifically states how she feels about it. There is no hammy manipulation trying to elicit listener reaction with juicy details. there are plenty of details and we are left to our own reactions.

It is clear that the narrator is well read and employs an excellent understanding of grammar.

The stories are quite interesting and I love that she backs them up with where she researched the information. Many of these are new to me and not the same old stuff different day. Full marks all around.

Excellent style and substance
