From Anger And Worry To Empowered Action

“Refrain from anger and forsake wrath. Do not fret--it leads only to evil.” - Psalm 37:8

The psalmist didn’t say that we wouldn’t have good reasons to be angry. The psalmist didn’t say we wouldn’t have good reasons to worry. Most assuredly most of us do.

Nevertheless, nursing our anger and grievances seldom leads us to positive outcomes. Allowing ourselves to be consumed with worry paralyzes and hinders our ability to find creative solutions. So how do we refrain?

Our anger is provoked by our sense of the unfairness and injustice that we are witnessing and experiencing and by our feelings of powerlessness.

When we identify and describe the specific wrongs, develop a plan to address them, and then take the specific actions to implement that plan, we shift from feelings of anger to empowerment.

Similarly our feelings of worry are stoked by our feelings of being overwhelmed and powerless in the face of our problems.

When we identify and describe the specific sources of our worries, we can then develop a plan to address them, and take the actions necessary to implement the plan. Our focus shifts from worrying to acting.

    What Does The Heart Desire?

“Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” - Psalm 37:4

What does the heart desire? At first we are tempted to believe the heart desires money, power, and status. However if you’ve ever spent much time around people who have obtained those things, you will find many of them are still miserable.

I’m convinced that there are three things our hearts truly desire. We desire peace. We desire purpose. We desire to be loved unconditionally.

We want peace. We want to be free of anger, resentment and bitterness. We want to escape the cycle of revenge and retribution. We may like drama in a book or movie, but we want to be free of it in real life. We want inner calm even in the midst of an outer storm.

We want purpose. We want to know that our lives have made a difference. We want to leave behind a positive legacy. We want to plant trees whose shade will be enjoyed by future generations, and seeds that will be harvested long after we are gone.

Finally, we want the knowledge that are we loved- not continently, not because of what we have or what we can do. Transactional love is not love at all. We want to know that we are loved as who we are, where we are, how we are. There’s nothing we can do to earn more and nothing we can do to lose it.

These are the things the heart desires. These are the things we will experience if we will take delight in the presence of God.

It’s Ok To Name Our Pain

“O LORD, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not listen? Or cry to you "Violence!" and you will not save?” - Habakkuk 1:2

Living in faith doesn’t mean living in denial. We sometimes try to comfort ourselves when going through hardships or injustices by telling ourselves it’s all part of God’s master plan.

But sometimes this answer isn’t enough for us. It’s not enough to get us through when we fail to recognize the very real pain, trauma, and injustice we are experiencing.

While it does say in Romans that in all situations God works for the good for those who love and who are aligned to God’s purposes, it did not say that all circumstances are good.

Not every bad thing that happens to us is a blessing in disguise. It’s ok and even necessary to first claim and name our pain. Then we look to God to comfort us and show us the way through.
