60 Seconds Of Hope- MLK Day Prayer

    God of justice and compassion,

you see us as we follow—

still searching for truth, meaning, and hope.

Help us be honest about what we seek.

When we want comfort without responsibility,

    or peace without justice,

    call us higher.

When we reach for power or position,

hoping faith will protect our place,

    turn our hearts toward service.

When we are burdened by injustice—

    by violence, inequality,

and systems that wound your children—

    strengthen us to do justice.

And when we are tired from the work of love,

weary from marching, praying, organizing, and hoping,

    renew our courage.

Teach us to seek and to build a world where all belong—

a world shaped by your justice and guided by your love,

the beloved community Dr. King dreamed of,

rooted in reconciliation, dignity, and peace.

When you ask us still, “What are you looking for?”

    we answer with hope:

We are looking to create a world marked by well-being, peace, and justice—the kind of love you require of us.

    Amen.

I’m Horace McMillon, and this is 60 Seconds of Hope.

    Peace be with you.

    When We Feel Discouraged

“But I said, ‘I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the LORD, and my reward with my God.’

    — Isaiah 49:4

Isaiah is remembered as one of the great prophets of history. The legacy of his words and ministry is difficult to overstate. Generations later, his words would be the very ones Jesus used to announce and describe the launch of his own public ministry.

Legacy is most often recognized in hindsight—but while it is being formed, it feels very different. Isaiah endured setbacks, disappointments, and heartbreak. The hard days far outnumbered the easy ones throughout his long life and ministry.

There were times he felt ineffective. There were times he felt like a failure. There were moments when it seemed as though all his effort had been poured out for nothing. In those moments, Isaiah clung to his faith. He trusted God to make his labor count for something—to bring redemption, to sustain hope, and to hold the final word.

May God remind us today that nothing offered in faith is ever wasted, and that even when we feel discouraged, hope is still being formed in us and through us. Amen.

I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.

  • What Are We Looking For?

    What Are We Looking For?

“When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, ‘What are you looking for?’” — from John 1:38

What are we really looking for?

Are we searching out of curiosity—drawn by something we can’t yet name?

Are we looking for power, influence, or status—hoping faith will secure us a better seat at the table?

Are we looking because we have a problem we can’t solve on our own—pain, fear, grief, or questions that refuse to let us go?

Or is our searching something deeper than all of that?

Maybe we are looking for purpose when life feels meaningless.

For relief when our hearts are burdened.

For belonging in a world where we feel isolated and alone.

For love that isn’t contingent or transactional.

    Jesus’ question invites honesty.

Because what we seek is often what we find, we must be careful about what we chase.

The question Jesus asked still waits for us today: What are we looking for?

    Prayer

    God of truth and grace,

give us the courage to be honest about what we seek.

Turn our hearts from what is shallow or fleeting,

and lead us toward that which brings life, love, and wholeness.

    Amen.

I’m Horace McMillon. This is 60 Seconds of Hope. Peace be with you.
