2ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A 2026
(Isaiah 49:3, 5-6; Ps 40(39):2; 1 Corinthians 1:1-3; John 1:29-34)
Theme: Called to Unite with the Lamb of God
At the start of the Ordinary Season, the Church deems it necessary to remind those Sanctified in our Lord Jesus that the Father’s voice at the River Jordan affirmed Prophet Isaiah’s prophecy of the Suffering Servant: that our Lord Jesus is the only-begotten Chosen One, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, and that we have been called into a spiritual partnership with the prophets and apostles to serve as living witnesses to deliverance from the rupture or condition caused by sin (hamartia) and to be the voice against the voices of the world opposed to the Faith, truth, and hope in God.
Therefore, we must pray for the Lord’s inspiration, just as John the Baptist did when he asked the Lord to grant him the grace to see and recognise the Lamb of God, from whence He came for baptism. We must confess our sins daily and wait to receive the gift of mercy, which shapes our minds and hearts for the reception of the breath of God’s Spirit, who helps us to do the Lord’s will and face the consequences of proclaiming His truth, life, and hope of a greater future.
Yes, St Paul reminds us in today’s second reading that we are called to be saints; hence, we must pray for the grace and peace to counter the fear within and without of becoming torches of the Light of the nation.
Therefore, we must continually gather at the Eucharistic Table to remember the sacrifice of the Lamb of God. Like John the Baptist, we pray silently for an impartation of light to understand how to live in the world but not of it. As a result, we need to step out of our comfort zones to connect with the Lord each day – to become true messengers and vessels of God’s mercy, confidence, justice, hope, and peace.
