By the final sentence in this book, the author has almost completed the set up of this story. Not completely, only almost.
The writer has established the main characters. Two of them take actions in reaction to the murder of the third. The actions of each are compelling. But neither character is well motivated. Each is angry and each takes an action to strike out in anger.
At the end of the book the two are back together at a point that absolutely indicates that their story isn’t over. Hundreds of pages ago, one of them stated her goal. She may have abandoned that goal, or switched goals. The other is a priest who appears to be a sociopath.
The writer devotes a lot of pages to flashbacks that paint bleak backstories of difficult childhoods. But those scenes don’t provide any emotional connection for readers.
It defaults to bad people doing bad things. Of course they do.

Loved the writing of both Early and Gerry’s voices. Father Dan is such a complicated and intriguing character. Loved this book.
