Publisher's summary

It Happened in the Highlands is the next audiobook in the new historical Highland series The Penningtons, from USA Today best seller May McGoldrick....

Lady Josephine Pennington was jilted by her fiancé once rumors spread about her questionable origins. Her adoptive parents have always provided her with the love and protection she’s needed to feel secure, and over the last 16 years she’s molded herself to meet the expectations of others. When she receives a package containing sketches where the subject is eerily familiar, Jo believes she might have found a clue to the identity of her birth mother.

When Captain Wynne Melfort ended his engagement to Jo Pennington 16 years ago, he never imagined he would see her again. But after he uncovers information that could reveal the truth about Jo's parentage, Wynne feels bound by duty to right an old wrong and inform her of his find. He didn’t expect for feelings long thought dead to resurface, for in his mind a love departed was gone forever.

As they strive to unravel the mystery of her birth, Jo must learn how to trust the man who’d once rejected her and Wynne must reconcile his head with his heart. But as secrets of the past begin to surface, evil forces will stop at nothing to keep Jo from uncovering the truth and reclaiming her legacy. Together, Jo and Wynne must fight the deadly menace lurking deep in the Highland mists.

Couldn't put it down

Kind of a different take on a money hungry family. Jo was a very strong personality. The narration was good, too. I look forward to any sequences.

Very predictable

Story was very predictable that’s why I gave the story only three stars. There were no surprises.
And, I am not a prude by any means but the steamy scenes were a bit much.
It got a four overall because the narrator was, as always, phenomenal. Saskia Maarleveld is my favorite narrator.

Wonderful story

As with other stories by these authors, I really enjoyed the love, turmoil and challenges the heroes faced. I also appreciated the issues that were addressed because they are issues that, unfortunately, we still face today!

Deeply profound

Delightful is the key word for this story......but that is only after the word heartbreak. This book brings to mind the question "What happens when you make a decision for what you think is all the rights reasons and it turns out to be wrong?"

The opening of the book prepares the reader for this finely written story of lost love. Captain Wynne Melfort originally did not catch my attention because I felt he was weak in character for jilting Jo. It wasn't till further into the book that he became more real when I learned his reasoning but seriously I was still upset with him until I realised his age at the time.

Jo was hung up on her feelings of not being enough. Many people can relate to her situation but I was glad when events in the book caused her to open her eyes and consider other possibilities. The authors superb job in this area will teach all readers a much needed lesson.

This book was well written and the descriptive scenes will draw the reader into this book.

I give this 4.5 STARS for being deeply profound in many areas of life causing this reader to think about things from another point of view.

Good story

I like this series quite a bit. It is fun to see what happened to the kids of one of my favorite couples from the Dream series...Millicent and Lyon. This is a good second book but the Mcgoldrick's can get a bit verbose. This story is filled with too much inane chatter. It feels as if they are deliberately trying to lengthen the story. I found myself skipping ahead more than I like. Saskia Maarleveld is very good. Much better than Sienna Frances from the Dream novels.

Heart warming characters with intricate plot.

Characters are real and infectious. The pace & timing of the story line is engaging causing the reader to be reluctant to pause listening. Just enough steam to keep it authentic.

Good, but....

I would prefer less detail in the sex.... I like the escape.... I like that it is easy and predictable... I would prefer sweet to steamy.
