Damen is a warrior hero to his people and the rightful heir to the throne of Akielos, but when his half brother seizes power, Damen is captured, stripped of his identity, and sent to serve the prince of an enemy nation as a pleasure slave.

Beautiful, manipulative and deadly, his new master, Prince Laurent, epitomizes the worst of the court at Vere. But in the lethal political web of the Veretian court, nothing is as it seems, and when Damen finds himself caught up in a play for the throne, he must work together with Laurent to survive and save his country.

For Damen, there is just one rule: never, ever reveal his true identity. Because the one man Damen needs is the one man who has more reason to hate him than anyone else.

How could the performance have been better?

I had issues with the performance at times in that the narrator would suddenly get very quite so it became very hard to hear especially while driving on the highway over the holidays. I had to turn up the volume almost as high as it would go which is headache inducing. Otherwise besides it was hard at times to distinguish voices and the narrator also had a very bored cadence to his voice. I am hoping book 2 is better

Yes, quite well done. The narrator of the audiobook was not for me, which was such a disappointment. (Stephen Bel Davies) Can't recall him doing anything that I've listened to before. Nevertheless I'll still be purchasing the next one...

As far as the story goes? It's everything you've heard and more.

On to the next one...

The story itself felt a bit short, but was well paced and engaging. Most of the voice work was good. Damiens voice could have done with a bit more personality but Laurents was great!

Well thought out story with interesting characters.

I agree with a lot of the reviews that say this was not the correct choice of narrator for this story. His tone is far too cheerful, as if reading a dry comedy. Even during scenes involving sexual violation and murder, he reads in the same, insouciant voice. It's slightly jarring.

Don't let it dissuade you from listening, though — the story really is very good and I'm excited for the next book.

The narrator takes a while to get used to

I know people say the book is a little heavy on being overly violent but the story is so good!!!

Amazing!!!
