I've never read or listened to a James Lee Burke book I didn't like, so I come in with that prejudice. This hero, like Dave Robicheaux, is battle-scarred,demon-chased and damaged but not dead yet, still alight with desire for love and justice.

As always with Burke, a solid story, excellent villains, descriptions of landscape and characters that rival any fine writer's out there, notes of redemption. Burke's language is, as always elegiac and my only gripe in listening to it vs. reading it is....come'on what bad guys speak with such poetic erudition? It works on the page, and it's part of Burke's flow but in narration it's just too gorgeous for the down and out. But I like hearing it enough that it's okay. Burke always provokes thought, he keeps us entertained.

The narrator is perfectly paired with the material, and the "Feast Day of Fools" metaphor (there's a bit of a lecture by one of the improbably bad guys about metaphors in the book) is wonderfully wrought.

Switch from Dave R. to a Texas sheriff allows new vistas into a few of Burkes recurring themes. It is a fabric glorified after WWII, ignored by polite society after Korea, renounced in and after Viet Nam and then given a kindly but superficial embrace in our Mid-East escapades - those who make war and those who know war. The terrifying vista of the military-industrial complex Burke portrays is only overshadowed by the reality that DDE warned us about.

If you could sum up Feast Day of Fools in three words, what would they be?

Mr. Patton (the reader) does a wonderful job on this book. The range of all the different voices he creates makes you think a whole ensemble is reading. As far as the story, it is good, not great. I enjoy James Lee Burke's books quite a lot, but this one seems to have a lot of extra words and descriptions which add nothing to the story.

Burke is a hell of a writer. His style flows. And his dialogue really fleshes out each character. This tough gritty south west police story hits all the right notes.

And Will Patton is perfect. He always brings gravity to his reads.

James Lee Burke writes wonderfully lyrical novels. They are perfect for audible books because the words paint clear images. His characters are developed well although towards the end of this novel the characters tended to become less 3 dimentional. I really like the Sheriff and Preacher. They are driven by complex issues. The narrator is terrific and it is easy to keep the characters straight. I'd recommend Feast of Fools just because of how well it sounds as you listen! I have to say that I think I prefer the 1st book about Sheriff Hack but this one was not "bad". You won't be disappointed if you like JL Burke's writing style because he can definitely keep your interest.
