Great content! Poor narration.

I am a big Cynthia Thurlow fan. I believe she is knowledgeable, super intelligent, great teacher, and has an amazing sense of humor. I loved this book, but Cynthia should not have narrated. It was difficult to listen and remain engaged. What kept me going is that the cotent was amazing and spot on. Cynthia has many amazing talents, but narration is not one of them. I would purchase this book regardless, as what she imparts is extremely valuable.

Beautifully articulated health content

Thank you Cynthia for providing an incredible resource for women at all stages of life. You have beautifully articulated the health content and have broken down these complex concepts in to easy to understand and applicable pearls. As an overworked health care provider you have triggered a wake up call in me to get my mind and body feeling better. Thank you and I hope this book finds its way into the hands of every woman I know!

Presentation is too complicated, gets boring

For an idea that is relatively simple -- fast for X hours a day, eat only during the other X hours -- she really complicates it. You first get a master class about hormones and nutrients, which, okay, she's trying to show us WHY this works, but the presentation is just SO BORING, way too much detail, I find my mind wandering and not absorbing anything she's saying. Then, when she FINALLY gets to the plan itself, she makes it SO COMPLICATED. Instead of just following a 16:8 eating plan, she has all these other things for you to do: fast for 24 hours, do one meal a day, carb cycle, on and on. I don't know if she's just trying to give people something different to do everyday, but I really don't need all those complications and having to worry about doing something different in the first 45 days when you're just trying to get used to the intermittent fasting.

And, after all that DATA she throws at you, she never really talks about ONE BASIC IDEA: How many calories should you be eating per day? No formula. No resource in the PDF. She indicates that you cut out ONE MEAL per day with her 16:8 plan, which could cut your calories by 1/3 if you'd been eating 3 meals a day. Just how low should you allow your calories to fall? She says if they get TOO LOW then your body could go into 'starvation mode' and stop losing weight, but she doesn't give any formula for figuring out how much you should be eating. She talks about how many grams of carbs to limit yourself to, but I never once heard her talk about how much total energy you should be consuming (Unless it was during one of those moments that she got so boring I tuned her out, but I don't think so).

Overall, the idea is good. The presentation not so much. And I would suggest she get a professional narrator in the future. Her monotone doesn't help with the boring factor.

The Information is Relevant, the Presentation is Difficult

I absolutely love Cynthia Thurlow. I have listened to her podcast, been on webinars where she has presented, and seen her Ted Talks. On her podcast (IF podcast with Melanie Avalon), she spoke about how she had to enunciate every single word for the audible book per her publisher instructions.

Cynthia, next time either get a new publisher or do it your way. The constant enunciation of every single word makes this book so difficult to listen to. I know that it is going to have good content, but I can hardly listen. The first chapter is nothing new if you have experience fasting, but I do want to hear her different plans for women according to their life stages. I know I put myself into menopause by extreme exercise + fasting, so I know women have to take their hormones into account when planning to IF.

But, I’m telling you, the presentation is horrible. I’m so sorry Cynthia. You are so amazing and I really think your publisher did you a disservice by insisting that you enunciate every word. It is one of the most annoying books I’ve ever listened to (second to switch on your brain).

Read this one. Don’t listen.

I found the content of this book to be thorough and useful and highly recommend the content. It’s actionable and easy to follow with tons of research to back it up.

Unfortunately, the author should not have read this and sounds like a robot throughout with absolutely zero enthusiasm in her voice and strange, forced enunciation that distracts from the message. I was looking forward to listening after hearing her TEDx talks and a recent podcast appearance, but unfortunately nothing of her enthusiasm or charisma comes through here. In addition to that, there is lots of content that you’ll want to go back and reference so you might as well have a book you can dog-ear and mark up.

Good IF primer

I’m an experienced IF’er and found this to be mostly review. I’ve read Gin Stephens and Jason Fung so I’m well-versed in insulin sensitivity and metabolic flexibility etc. I was mostly interested in this because I want to learn more about IF and macros for menopausal women. There was plenty of good information about that in this book.

I really like Cynthia Thurlow and have listened to many great interviews and podcasts with her. I was a little surprised then when I heard her “audiobook” voice - Cynthia has little to no affect in her reading voice and it was surprisingly uncomfortable to listen to. Hopefully for future books she has a different reader.

Learning

I have been doing IF for 3 years and didn’t realize how much information I didn’t know. This book has taught me more about hormones and how they affect the body. Being an almost 50 year old woman and reading this book makes me realize how doing what I did three years ago and doing it now will not provide the same results.

Excellent content, not the easiest to listen to.

Very helpful breakdown of IF. I plan to implement this protocol, whereas others have been less than helpful this filled in the gaps.
