Conceptually unique, hilarious, and frightening, a: A Novel is the perfect literary manifestation of Andy Warhol's sensibility. In the late sixties, Warhol set out to turn a trade book into a piece of pop art, and the result was this astonishing account of the artists, superstars, addicts, and freaks who made up the Factory milieu.

Created from audiotapes recorded in and around the Factory, a: A Novel begins with the fabulous Ondine popping several amphetamines and then follows its characters as they converse with inspired, speed-driven wit and cut swaths through the clubs, coffee shops, hospitals, and whorehouses of 1960s Manhattan.

Contains mature themes.

I’ve been waiting for ages for this to become an audiobook. Daniel Henning is perfect. Listening to him as Ondine is hilarious. The Tape 6, Side 2 chapter where Ondine and Edie Sedgwick (Taxine) are coming up with bonkers ideas is a highlight.

Andy Warhol’s a feels like it was always meant to be an audiobook, since it was completely transcribed from audio tapes Warhol had made to create a “24 hours in the life of Ondine” project. It’s a work that needs to be read aloud and heard.

Fans of Warhol’s Factory work from the ‘60s will surely enjoy this. Lots of different Factory characters pop in and out constantly, and Daniel Henning’s subtle and nuanced delivery of each really succeeds at bringing this book to life where another reader may have failed at the sheer scale of it all.

I’m so happy this has has finally been made. A perfect audiobook.
