Publisher's summary

The 5th Wave meets Beauty and the Beast in this fast-paced and heart-stopping novel about an invasion of murderous creatures and one girl fighting for her life at the end of the world.

He has no voice or name, only a rank, Eighth. He doesn't know the details of the mission, only the directives that hum in his mind.

Dart the humans. Leave them where they fall.

His job is to protect his Offside. Let her do the shooting.

Until a human kills her...

Sixteen-year-old Raven is at summer camp when the terrifying armored Nahx invade. Isolated in the wilderness, Raven and her fellow campers can only stay put. Await rescue. Raven doesn't like feeling helpless, but what choice does she have?

Then a Nahx kills her boyfriend.

Thrown together in a violent, unfamiliar world, Eighth and Raven should feel only hate and fear. But when Raven is injured, and Eighth deserts his unit, their survival comes to depend on trusting each other...

Critic reviews

"Detailed settings and swift action make this novel an edge-of-your-seat page-turner. Readers who enjoy post-apocalyptic literature and interspecies unrequited love stories will be drawn in to this story immediately." (VOYA, August 2017)

"Teens will love the pace and dialogue...As Raven and Eighth find themselves on an intersecting path, readers will be sucked into humanity’s struggle to survive and the Nahx’s all too focused efforts to ensure that it doesn’t. VERDICT A first purchase for teen collections." (School Library Journal, September 2017)

What did I want more? Forgiveness or death?

OMG, ATFF. this book gave me all the effing feels... 5 Stars

Quick Synopsis:
Raven is sent with her Tucker (her bf) and Topher (his twin brother) to work as counselors in a wilderness camp as an alternative restitution for-I believe- arson. While they are at this camp, Earth is invaded by aliens (or Nahx as they have been dubbed). Now all of the campers are essentially hiding out there, awaiting rescue or the Nahx and their fatal darts.
Eighth is a part of that Alien force which operates under a hive mentality with one purpose: killing humans. Eighth is defective, however, and soon crosses paths with Raven.

My Spoiler Free Thoughts:
This book is about survival, loyalty, and love, and G.S. Prendergast has woven these ideals together seamlessly. I think Raven is tough, Eighth is intriguing, and their character growth and bond feels really authentic.
I know the book is being compared to Beauty and the Beast, but I just don't draw that connection between the two. The only similarity is you-are-living-with-a-different-species-you-don't-like and nothing beyond that.
I've read that the story is incredibly slow paced, but I felt for the amount of time that is passing, the pace was very appropriate and even not as slow as it could have been.

Also THE MOST AWESOME narrators ever!!!

I definitely recommend this book, and I've posted a spoiler filled review and discussion on my Instagram @whitespacebooks

I was a bit disappointed after reading other reviews

This book was tough to get through. It just moved very slowly until around chapter 80. I also feel like the toxic relationships are a bit triggering. I struggled to finish the book, the very end has a great twist so it does end up grabbing your attention. But it was a very slow first half of the book.

Exactly what I was hoping.

Sci-fi, love and fully formed characters.
I only really listen to audiobooks now so a good performance along with a wonderful story is a must. This hit everything And more! I laughed, cried and yelled at the story. A wonderful companion to any chore or craft project.

Joy

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I like the relationship between August and Raven and I also enjoyed the writing. I would say this is one of the best books I’ve read in a while. There are so much action so much drama and intrigue, I was left wondering whether anyone will make it out alive at the end.

Predictable and Slow

After hearing such raving reviews from TikTok I had higher expectations than what was delivered. It absolutely reads like a teenage melodrama with predictable love triangles and toxic behavior that gets swept under the rug as if it is normal and healthy. The female protagonist is painfully stereotypical in so many ways, and lacks any development throughout the story. The other characters lack depth and I felt myself not really caring about them at all, and many just seemed to sacrifice their lives randomly for the female protagonist as if they had zero will to live outside of being an escape plan for her.
There is zero explanation or motive for the “alien invasion” and it really only seems to be the back drop for a teenage monster romance book, instead of a true science fiction story.
I found myself asking “when will this get good?” After being several hours in and it really only ever gets okay. Someone on TikTok boasted it was the best series they had ever read. I think perhaps they need to read more books. This book feels like it is desperately trying to be the next Hunger Games or Twilight Saga.

Long story short: cringy names and characters, predictable and slow teenage monster romance.

Such a good surprise!!!

I wish this book was more well known. I loved everything about it and the second novel. I was so bummed to learn Audible wouldn’t support the third installment. Please give this a try!!
