Publisher's summary

From Pamela Redmond Satran, the acclaimed author of Babes in Captivity and The Man I Should Have Married, comes a story of inspiration and transformation for the really desperate housewife. She's old enough to be his mother. Alice has always looked young for her age, even with her graying hair and her dowdy New Jersey housewife style. Make that ex-housewife: Now that her husband's gone and her daughter is grown, Alice is in desperate need of a whole new life. So she lets her best friend Maggie, a hip New York City artist, transform her on New Year's Eve. Soon, thanks to the wonders of hair dye and tight jeans, Alice looks really young, as one night in a Manhattan bar confirms. At midnight, she kisses a boy who was in diapers when she was in high school. She's having too much fun to care. The white lie Alice tells Josh gets her thinking that if no one asks her age, she doesn't have to tell. So she applies for a job she had briefly before becoming a full-time mom - and gets it. Meanwhile, Josh is falling head over heels for Alice, who's just way cooler than girls his age. He figures she's about 29 - and for the first time since she was 29, or possibly ever, Alice feels that life is ripe with possibility. Unfortunately one possibility is that she's gonna get caught. Challenging the adage that the truth will set you free, Younger is a hilarious and insightful story that proves that you're only as young as you feel.

It depends on where you're coming from...

STORY (romance) - I loved this story, but I will qualify that by saying that I can really identify with the main character. It's about a woman in her 40's (Alice) who undergoes a makeover, passes for 20-something, and finds a new young lover and new promising career. I'm not in that same situation, but I think this book would apply to many women who are older and are looking back at their lives, seeing their mistakes and wishing they'd done some things differently. In this case Alice gets a second chance. I enjoyed her experiences and cringed at some of her predicaments but, most of all, I totally fell for Josh. If I could do things over again, I'd want someone just like him! Smart, sexy, sensitive, adoring...perfect. I must admit he's probably why I liked the book so much!

So now for what the book isn't. It Isn't like the cover art which suggests three giggling girls taking a selfie. It has more substance. It isn't hilarious as Audible's summary suggests. I didn't really find anything funny about it. It's chick lit about a woman who has gone through a divorce, has a grown daughter and is taking time to find herself...in a pretty unusual manner. I enjoyed everything, even the bitchy women that Alice seems to surround herself with. Apparently the book spawned a TV series, but I haven't checked it out.

PERFORMANCE - Perfect voice for Alice, and she does a good job. Doesn't distinguish between characters or do anything special, however.

OVERALL - I'd recommend definitely for older women who think it might be cool to live vicariously through Alice's experiences. Younger women and girls might not have the same perspective. There's some non-explicit sex and a mild amount of cursing. No violence.

Loved it!

The writing is great, the characters are great and the narrator is great. It's a great book for 20 and 30 somethings.

It was a nice story

It was kinda like a coming of age story in reverse. A bit slow at times. But worth the credit

You can't polish a turd.

While the performer was fine the story left a lot to be desired. I rolled my eyes a lot with impatience at the main character. She created this ridiculous world for herself and whines about it the whole way through the book. I wouldn't be friends with this woman or her a-hole daughter. I'm not sure why I finished this book. I guess I hoped for a layoff at the end which I did not find. Disappointing.

I Hated Nearly Every Character

What disappointed you about Younger?

The characters were two dimensional, whiny, and generally unlikable. Alice, the protagonist, was the worst of the lot. She dithers constantly over her situation but takes no action to improve her life. Every major development happens because of the actions of others: she only gets a boyfriend because best friend Maggie literally pushes her into him; she only gets noticed at work because the super-mean boss is out sick; she only stays with boyfriend Josh because new pal Lindsey goads her into it; the big reveal doesn't come because she chose to become a better person, but rather because she got caught, and blah-blah-blah. I nearly quit a third of the way in, but figured at some point Alice was going to reverse course and take action for herself. I nearly quit again at the two thirds mark because this still hadn't happened. Alice almost gets a clue in the very last chapter, but it wasn't worth the pain to get that far. The only likable character was best friend Maggie. She would call Alice on her nonsense, frequently using the exact phrases that were going through my mind, too. I would have preferred a story about Maggie & her troubles, honestly. Two more thoughts. Boyfriend Josh was likable enough, but in a Prince Charming or Ken Doll sort of way. He was literally too good to be true and far too understanding of the horrid treatment he put up with from Alice. Finally, I suspect Alice's daughter is schizophrenic. She would literally change her opinions and attitude from one chapter to the next, with no mention of her reversal, purely to drive the plot.

Has Younger turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, I'm the sort of glutton for punishment that keeps hoping the next romance book will actually be readable.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I did not care for the narrator's clipped tones and Valley Girl accent. I also felt she did not handle the male voices well.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment.

Any additional comments?

Ugh. Thank goodness I got this as a daily deal.

Younger isn’t always better.

I watched the TV Land series before I knew this was a book. I am glad I found the series before the book. I enjoy the television show much better.
If I had read the book first, I probably would not have given the TV series a chance.

Seeing the TV series first helped me visualize the story, but in the book the protagonist and some of her supporting friends and bosses had different names and were written differently than the series. I found that hard to folllow the story in book format because I couldn’t keep the characters straight.

I thought the narrator was ok.
I tried the book to see how it differs from the show. I am glad I did. I did read this book through the romance package, I am glad I didn’t have to use a credit for it.

Totally Forgettable

Would you try another book from Pamela Redmond Satran and/or Meghan Wolf?

probably not

What was most disappointing about Pamela Redmond Satran’s story?

Really shallow.

What about Meghan Wolf’s performance did you like?

Performance was fine. Story was lame and silly

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Now I remember why I don't like chick lit.

Any additional comments?

There are way too many good books out there for me to waste my time with this kind of book.
