Lovely Historical Romance 💑

This is a lovely historical romance with an adventurous plot and delightful characters. Because this is a longer book, the writer was allowed to delve into more French history and develop characters that are delightful and written with dimension. I enjoyed the romance between Thomas and Aimee a lot. From the beginning, the push and pull of their relationship made for a fun adventure and a beautiful ending.

I always enjoy anything that Tim Campbell narrates. He is exceptional with accents and his male/female voices are superb. 👏

I definitely recommend this book to all the historical romance enthusiasts who enjoy a longer story. 😋

love love love

This is my absolute favorite book that Cynthia Wright has written and I didn't think it could get any better until I listened to Tim Camball narrate it. I couldn't stop listening.
Two strong willed people refusing to give into love, it's simply prefect!

Backstory to Beauvisage Family But Stands Strongly

I still have my well-read/well-loved paperback copy of YOU AND NO OTHER. It has long been one of my favorites, but I confess to not having reread it in awhile. This time, instead of my paperback, I switched between my ebook copy and the audiobook. After reading and listening to this book, I recalled how much I really loved reading romances set during medieval times. YOU AND NO OTHER provides the back story to Cynthia Wright's Beauvisage books. She also recently updated it a bit to drop hint about the famous DaVinci painting of François I that is a major plot point in THE SECRET OF LOVE.

Aimée de Fleurance inadvertently insults King François I upon meeting him, but his good friend, Thomas St. Briac, is able to smooth things over. Soon after this meeting, to escape an unwanted marriage, Aimée disguises herself and joins the king's court, but realizes that as soon as the king recognizes her, all will be lost. St. Briac reluctantly agrees to help her, but she can only hide for so long. They both become more embroiled in schemes and intrigue than they imagined, while desperately fighting their attraction to one another.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story, including the historical details of François I and his court. Wright's descriptions of the clothing and food of the time give the reader a strong sense of time and place. Aimée is a spunky heroine, always ready to try a new scheme to escape a tangled situation. St. Briac is an alpha-hero with out being too overbearing or dominating. I enjoyed his humor, sensitivity, and friendship with François.

Fans of Cynthia Wrigtht's other books, will enjoy reading about the Beauvisage ancestors, not only for the connection, but for the story itself. Those unfamiliar with her work, will want to read more!

As mentioned, on this reread, I read my ebook and listened to the audiobook. Sometimes at the same time and sometime not. Tim Campbell is the narrator and as expected, he did a fabulous job. While the story is set in France, Campbell limits his French accent to the French words in the text and the narration is more of a British English. I am grateful for this, because if the entire book was read in a French accent, I think it would be harder to understand. In his narration, there is enough French to get a strong feel for the setting. Despite the fact that I finished reading the ebook before I finished listening, I continued to listen to the book, well, just because. I look forward to listening to more Wright-Campbell audiobooks!

Wonderful story! Loved every minute!

Once again the duo of Cynthia Wright and Tim Campbell have done it! Loved this rendition of Cynthia's beautifully written story. Her words and his voice just made the characters come to life and jump off the pages. I felt as if I was there, taken back in time with Thomas and Aimee. I felt Thomas' frustration with Aimee's mischievous scheming that slowly became friendship and then love, which is certainly not what he had planned lol. I fell in love with these characters, just as I have with all the characters that Cynthia has written. You feel like you get to know them on an intimate level as if they are real people, and you are in some small way a part of their life stories. The way that Tim is so seamlessly able to speak all the parts, yet you can tell which character is which due to the changes of tone in his voice is amazing! I will definitely listen to anything these two work on together!

What did you like best about this story?

I loved that I was kept captivated from beginning to end. The story was exciting and from beginning to end there was never a dull moment.

What does Tim Campbell bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Hearing the voices of the characters narrated so well helped to make them seem even more real than the author's excellent writing of them. Listening to a book makes you feel closer to the story, and when a scene is particularly emotional, just hearing the catch in the character's voice adds so much to the scene. Tim's voice oozed each and every emotion perfectly, be it anger, lust, joy, sorrow or sass.

The joy of an audio book is that if you are lucky, not only do you get to listen to a fabulous book, but it is also narrated by a talented person. Cynthia Wright has written an amazing story. Aimee de Fleurence is being forced into a marriage to a horrid man, and she will do anything to escape that fate. That escape comes in the form of joining the King's court using her sister's invitation, and keeping herself well hidden to evade discovery. Her sister was to become one of the King's 'women' and although Aimee admired her King, she hoped he wouldn't discover that she had taken her sister's place. He would either be furious at the deception and force her to return home, or he would expect her to take her sister's place in his bed. Neither option was acceptable to her. She just hoped she could get far enough away from home to be able to slip away from the travellers before that happened.

Unfortunately for her she is discovered before that, not by the king, but by his good friend Thomas St. Briac. He is infuriated with her for putting herself at risk, and despite her being a thorn in his side, he does his best to keep her hidden from the King. His plans go awry though, and in order to keep her from the King's bed St.Briac tells him of Aimee's plight and then does the unthinkable, tells the King he wants to marry her. That keeps the King happy, but he is shocked to discover that Aimee is less than pleased. Even though she won't go through with a wedding, she knows that now she must find a way to break off the engagement without damage to either of their reputations.

She wouldn't be adverse to marrying him, IF he loved her. But knowing he barely tolerated her made her determined to get away from him as soon as possible. Circumstances occur that turns the situation around, and St.Briac is the one needing her help by remaining betrothed to her.

Their relationship is a fabulous one to discover, either they absolutely despise each other, or they are in the throws of passion with each other instead. St.Briac is a fabulous character whose wit and cheekiness had me smiling many times throughout the book, especially when he was teasing Aimee.

Not only was their the romance aspect of the story to keep me intrigued but also there was some skullduggery, possible treason, and deception afoot that could lead to an innocent man being hanged. There was never a dull moment in this story and the only thing that could make it better, and indeed did, was the superb narration by Tim Campbell. He portrayed each character fabulously, from the deep, sexy, sometimes cheeky and playful timbre of St.Briac's voice, to the gentle sweet voice of Aimee. The voices of the King, children, the villains, and even an old crone were superbly done as well.

As I said at the start of my review, the joy of an audio book comes from an equally good story and it's narration, and I am happy to say that this book definitely had both. I can't recommend it enough. There are only a handful of narrators that I feel are worthy of a 5 star rating, and Tim Campbell is definitely one of them. A 5 star novel with a 5 star narration.

Loved This Audiobook

Once again Cynthia Wright has proved that her Renaissance Romantic Books are the very best. She has even mad them more memorable with the talented Tim Campbell's narration. Her book "You And No Other" is one of my favorite because of the handsome Thomas St. Briac who is determined never to marry but than he's never met the impulsive and bewitching Aimee de Fleurance who pretends to be her sister and finds herself in the court of the King of France where St. Briac unwillingly aids her in keeping the King fooled as to her identity. This book has plenty of twists and turns and finds St Briac falling hopelessly in love with Aimee who constantly needs saving from the romantic advances of the King who thinks she is her sister.
With the fantastic Tim Campbell's narrative and his wonderful voice that captures each and ever character's personalities. This is an Audiobook that you must have to listen to and read long with Cynthia Wright's great book. So set back and let You And No Other take you on an amazing journey with Thomas and Aimee. You won't be sorry!

Amazing Historical Adventure in 16-Century France!

You And No Other is an amazing historical adventure set in 16th-century France. It is probably my favorite book written by Cynthia Wright, which has withstood the test of time. Originally written in 1984, it received a fantastic audio update by the incomparable Tim Campbell narrating. Tim’s artful performance, including his seductive French accents, combined with Cynthia’s wonderful prose culminate in a thoroughly entertaining experience.

The story begins when King Francois I and his trusted knight, Thomas Mardouet, seigneur de St. Briac are hunting one afternoon in the woods when they come across a lovely dark-haired beauty, Aimée de Fleurance, whose beguiling charms unwittingly stops the hunt. Later that evening, Aimée ends up disguising herself as her sister and she embarks on joining the royal court to avoid an arranged marriage to an awful man. When St. Briac learns of the kings intention of making her one of his mistresses, he steps up and informs the king that he is in love with Aimée and wants her to be his wife. The rest of the book is St. Briac trying to convince Aimée that they need to be married for any number of reasons (love not being one of them), and then realizing that he’s fallen in love with her.

What makes this story stand out from the rest is threefold: (1) our hero, is refreshingly intelligent, charming, and deliciously sexy! (2) The banter between Aimee & St. Briac is both comedic and charming. Aimée’s schemes are never ending, but he is one step ahead of her at almost every turn. And, (3) the French setting is unique and incredibly well researched. It is very refreshing to see a hero who is not a Duke, an Earl, or some other form of English nobility. Bravo!

I Don't Know

The story is just alright to me. It seemed long and tedious or maybe I couldn't get past the accent. Don't get me wrong, I love Tim Campbell as a narrator and there are parts of this book that I liked. but I would never listen to it again. I tried to listen to book 2 and I returned it right away.

A captivating romance

A long and well developed story, characters and storyline. The king ended up being one of my favorite characters with his "big nose" 😊. Also loved the friendship between the H and the king. I am not sure how many things I have started without knowing how exactly I would continue and end it but managed it nicely regardless of lacking all the preplanning and designing. So it made me chuckle when the Heroine did not have a plan and kept saying I will figure it out as it comes along. There were many lovely characters in this book. I give it 2 thumbs up

Cynthia Wright writes such wonderful books. Whether I read one of her stories with a setting in the United States, London or French, each are extremely entertaining with intense detail to the historical moment, encouraging the reader to do some internet research themselves.

Historically, I learn much of the events of history—the machinations behind historical happenings is always intriguing. The setting is in France, and one I enjoyed very much. Narrator Tim Campbell is a favored narrator. His accents add sparkle to the dialogue. There are some French word pronunciations not quite right. Tim, if you happen to be reading this review, contact me. It’s just a few words, but it is worth mentioning. 😊

Aimée de Fleurance is a delightful character, although one character of the story calls her a head-strong little vixen. At 17, she has zest of life, humor, a quick-wit and determination to succeed and outwit those who determine a woman’s future. Her approach to her problems create more and as a reader I laughed most the time! However much she wants control of her future, events wrap their tentacles neatly around her wrists and she must make the most of it.

Honorine, Aimée’s sister, is the prim and proper young lady, however, her flaw rests in her determination to be part of the royal entourage almost landing in the king’s bed. Aimée saves her sister, but can she save herself from a king who has long been imprisoned and just wants to cavort with desirable young women?

Thomas’s sarcastic remarks to his man-servant, Gaspire, are entertaining and vastly enlightening as to Thomas’s character and frame of mind.

Thomas and Aimee share one common trait, stubbornness. Each speak freely what is on their minds in a caustic, sharp-tongued manner making the dialogue absolutely great fun! Aimée plays with fire as events get out of hand.

There are many supporting characters who add a lot to this read and help develop the main characters further. All in all, this is one author I highly recommend for her historical romances. I look forward to continuing the series. It is one not to be missed!

I loved every minute of it. One reason I love Cynthia Wright's stories is because when eventually the H&H realise they love each other and express their love for each other the story doesn't end abrubtly, there's always a lot more that happens after that. Tim Campbell was also brilliant as always.

If you're looking to be submerged in romance, excitement, history and laughter, then this book is for you.

I was totally wrapped up in the entertaining story, thrilling plot, breathtaking romance, delightful characters and heart warming humour. I didn't want to stop listening.
