Embark on a gripping 25-year journey delving into the author's investigation of insurance crimes in Miami, spotlighting Special Investigation Units (SIU) an investigative world invisible to most, yet one for which we all pay.

In YOU PAID FOR THIS, award-winning author Richard Wickliffe takes the listener from routine burglaries to art theft on the high-seas, arson for profit, and even failed ritual sacrifices. He describes a variety of cases he encountered, including the Russian mob and organized crime, boat thefts linked to unconscionable human trafficking, sunken cars that conceal deadly secrets, and the pitfalls of faking one's death. The book culminates with the SIU's involvement in Miami's harrowing Pain & Gain double murder case, featuring kidnapping, extortion, and mutilation.

With an informative yet witty tone, YOU PAID FOR THIS exposes the creative and chilling facets of insurance crimes, cautioning and advising listeners on how to protect themselves from potential victimization in their own lives.

We’ve all been exposed to the insurance industry in some manner. Whether through life insurance, car insurance, homeowners’ insurance, or some other type of policy, insurance has played a role in many of our lives. If you are like many, you pay your premiums, rarely if ever need to file a claim, and rest easy at night knowing that if something happens you will be covered. Yet, through “You Paid For This” readers are shown behind the scenes of the not so average insurance claims.

From tax fraud to arson, boat, auto and injury claims, and even organized crime, the work of the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has certainly been an interesting one. While entertaining at every turn, author Richard Wickliffe is sure to point out that these claims, paid out, are having a larger impact on the lot of us, accounting for a $932 per year per person increase in premiums. This is a significant figure, the places I could go, the things I could see with that additional money!

As this book begins, readers are forced to put themselves in Wickliffe’s neighbor’s shoes. Whoever thinks they are going to have an interesting work conversation with someone who works in insurance? Despite this, “You Paid For This” opens the doors to a niche investigative unit within most insurance carriers, as they combat fraud. Transporting readers to Miami, Wickliffe details the more unique stories of his 25-year career in SIU. From the case that inspired the movie “Pain & Gain,” to the author’s viral article attracting the attention of the “Russian Federation,” and the various means in which people attempt to pull off insurance fraud, I found myself extremely engrossed in Wickliffe’s “boring” insurance job.

Peppered with pictures throughout, including that of burned-out houses, cars, and other images conveying the nature of the story within, Wickliffe certainly has a way with keeping readers fully engrossed. The writing, detail, humor, and sheer unbelievable scenarios that played out within had me immersed in the wild events taking place. Wickliffe’s career in insurance has certainly been extraordinary, lending well to the page, the screen, and even his fictional writing endeavors. His life experiences, banter with his wife, colleagues, and criminals, creates an uproariously enlightening read with an important takeaway – these criminals are costing us, we are in fact paying for this.
