After writing two adult romances, what inspired me to write a young adult rom-com?
"I fell in love with love stories at a very young age, and I credit (or blame) ‘90s R&B music for that! Growing up listening to Whitney, Mariah, and Janet primed me for relating to the BIG emotions and swoons we often attach to romance. These songs became the soundtrack to my first crushes, romantic disappointments, and even heartbreak. With my first adult novels, I was inspired to write the same emotions that music can make you feel. But something about “young” love is different. They say you never forget your first love—with all its intensity, naivety, and unchecked optimism. Creatively, that felt like an exciting yet untapped avenue for me. I thought back to my middle school and high school years and how I’d spend hours weaving love stories in my imagination—with that same soundtrack. Looking back felt nostalgic but also felt fresh and vivid, like listening to an old favorite song for the first time in a long while. I wanted to give Andie and Tommy’s romance those same feels, with a summertime setting that paints a picture as clear as the memories!" –Myah Ariel, author of You Jump First
