Near the top of that list was “never ever pose nude for anyone.” So when Vanessa became the first African-American woman to win the title of Miss America in September 1983 (an accomplishment that she never planned for or desired), only to be forced to resign ten months later due to a nude photo scandal, the lives of both Vanessa and Helen took an unexpected turn. But Vanessa survived this setback, and many others to come, to enjoy a thirty-plus-year career as an award-winning singer and actress. Vanessa has been asked to write her memoir many times, but only now—with the help of her mother—is she ready to tell her story.

Vanessa grew up in Millwood, New York, part of one of the town’s only black families. As a teenager, Vanessa defied Helen, flirting with boys, drinking, and smoking pot. But despite their early conflicts, Helen has always ardently protected her daughter, staying in contact with the FBI about the multiple death threats Vanessa received after being crowned and being there for her during the dissolution of her two marriages.

Now the mother of four children, Vanessa describes how she’s made it through the ups and downs of her life as well as her career. Yes I would definitely listen again, Vanessa's life is very interesting and there is not a dull moment.

i feel as though I learnt a lot from Vanessa and Helen in this book which I plan to carry with me throughout my life.

Huge fan of VW, she should do another book and Helen should definitely do a book on parenting, she's an amazing mother.

The Honesty

I don’t often love autobiographical stories but in this case I thought both women were candid and the book was well done.

Extraordinary Read

I stumbled upon this photo of Vanessa Williams and her Mom and thought she was always so beautiful to me. I knew of her Ms America situation but, so what! I was intrigued to read about her life and her Moms life journeys.

7 hours with the Williamses = captivating and well spent!

Vanessa's mom just passed away in December 2024. It's a bit surreal to hear Miss Helen yelling her story here, but priceless. I love the format and the fearless honesty of both writers. I appreciated Vanessa contextualizing her music, film, and TV careers amidst the changes in her personal life. I can walk away with a better sense of her and a deeper appreciation for her work as well. For a fan like me? This was a most satisfying read.
