Publisher's Summary

Years ago, a young woman was beaten and raped while onlookers did nothing. Now those witnesses are becoming victims themselves.

Baltimore Homicide Detective J. D. Fitzpatrick has seen a lot of horrific violence, both as a cop and during his deployment in Afghanistan, but nothing like the trail of tortured bodies that are turning up throughout the city. He’s up against a brutal killer with a very personal vendetta, and now J. D. is beginning to suspect that his medical examiner may be shielding some crucial evidence linked to the case.

Assigned to the murder victims, forensic pathologist Dr. Lucy Trask is intrigued by J. D.’s compassion, but she isn’t about to mix work with pleasure. Not while there’s a ruthless killer on the loose. And definitely not while she’s keeping a dark secret that could connect her to these vicious killings—and put her next on the hit list.

Critic Reviews

“Rose doesn’t allow her luxurious characterizations to get in the way of a wicked good plot that grabs hold and maintains tension from beginning to end.” ( Publishers Weekly)

Not the right narrator

I really enjoy Karen Rose's books, and so far this one is no exception, but this is just NOT the right narrator for the book. I've enjoyed Ms. Gavin's narration in The Hollows series (among others), but her voice is driving me crazy with this one. It sounds like she's lisping and some of the accents are terrible... things that I haven't noticed before. Whatever she's changed, she needs to quit and change back.

I may have to buy the book

I am a huge fan of Karen Rose's books, the audio productions in particular. I am about 2 hours into this one and I am tempted to go to the book store and buy the book to read instead. The story line is already very good very typical Karen Rose, however, the narrator is terrible. Hard to understand and her fake southern accents are like nails on a chalkboard. Very distracting to the storyline.

Interest story...if you can stand to listen

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It's okay

What does Marguerite Gavin bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She sounds like she has been on a drinking binge or she has had a stroke...it's horrible to listen too! Worst narrator I have ever heard!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Nooo...I liked the story...just could stand the narrator. I felt like I needed to offer her coffee to sober up.

Narration ruined story

I am not sure if I will be able to make it through the story with this narrator. The book is otherwise ok, although this is my 2nd or 3rd Karen Rose book and the characters' are very predictable.

Good story -- Horrible narrator!!

I almost stopped listening after about 30 minutes, but since I love all of Karen Rose's books, I soldiered on. The lisping narrator was so annoying! I'm not sure if it's a speech impediment or if she is lisping on purpose for some unknown reason that only she can answer. Whatever the case, it almost ruined the book for me -- almost. I agree with a previous reviewer, buying the book was an idea I had as well. If not for the narration I would have given it 5 stars.

Just started...

I am really having a hard time listening to this narrator! I just started, but the voice just is too raspy and the words just don't flow! Bad recording I hope??

Decent story with some aggravating bits

Karen Rose novels are not easy to digest at times, as she favors pretty gruesome storylines. For some reason this is in the romance category but it is easily a thriller with some romance thrown in. Overall I liked the book, especially JD. I didn’t care even a little about his romantic counterpart. Her ignorance and stubbornness caused to much extra drama and damage. I kept wishing he would dump he and hook up with his partner who was far more interesting and less neurotic. I will say I figured out the villain before the reveal but not too far ahead. I just used my Murder She Wrote Fangirl skills.

Nice balance of romance and suspense!

Would you listen to You Belong to Me again? Why?

Perhaps in a few year's time, not so soon because I don't like Ms Gavin's portrayal of Lucy. I know Lucy spoke with a bit of an accent that's "not quite Southern but not from the city" either but I didn't care for Ms Gavin's choice to have Lucy droppin' her 'g's and giving her twangy, nasal voice.Since, like most romantic SUSPENSE, the male lead has equal time with the heroine, Ms Gavin's voice got too much for me if I listened for too long. Unfortunately, the story is interesting and in the end that won out.

Who was your favorite character and why?

JD and Thorne. JD is warm and caring and while not your typical romance genre alpha bad boy, I found him sexy and long-term material.Thorne because I detect some hidden fires. He's enigmatic since we aren't given much detail about him but he can be fiercely protective. The alpha to JD's beta hero. I'd like to see a book with him as the male lead.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, because Ms Gavin's voice isn't versatile enough to cover male and female characters. Several times she read a line with the incorrect expression, for example when the character is talking to himself, she reads it as if he's speaking to someone or asking someone a question. It pulled me out of the story trying to figure out why a character was saying something or who he was talking to.

Awful narration.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Different narrator. Maybe it would have been better if the narration was better.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Hunger Games

Would you be willing to try another one of Marguerite Gavin’s performances?

Absolutely not. She is really bad. Not everyone is meant to do this, she definately isnt. I listen to lots of audible books and this is the worst.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I just couldn"t get past the bad narration.
