Publisher's summary

When he was a boy, Siv McCaig came face-to-face with a monster. After a childhood lived in fear, he encountered it again. Siv just wants to work his trade as a blacksmith, play cards at the saloon, and watch the stars. But he'll never be at peace without answers.

What was the monster that burned down his house? Where did it come from? And will it ever come back again? His search becomes a battle for his planet's survival. Only two things might keep all of Verde from falling to the horrors of Siv's nightmares, but they've been lost for 200 years: technology and magic.

Magnificently wonderful - 5 stars for sure

This book has it all - great storyline, relatable characters, and everything else a good book should have. I enjoyed the fact that this is PG-13 level story, but by no means uninteresting for anyone.

The added sound effects and speech impressions took a bit to get used to - I wonder if Audible will ever have a feature to turn sound effects off and on independently of the reading. I also tend to put my books on 1.5x speed (sometimes 2x) because they are played back so slow. This one, however, is pretty fast on 1x. So instead of taking the 7 hours I was expecting, it took just over 10. But it was well worth it.

There were no major plot twists or surprises in this book. It was just a great read/listen from start to finish. The only real downside is that now I want to listen to the rest of the trilogy, but I suppose I will wait patiently.

Great job! I hope anyone interested in a different type of post-apocalyptic sci-fi fantasy story will give it a shot. They will not be disappointed.

Amazing story and experience!

I read this book a few years ago and immensely enjoyed it.
It had everything I like. It had wonderful sci-fi action, fantasy, drama, an amazing story line and intriguing characters to name a handful of things.
The opportunity to experience the audiobook was one I couldn't pass up. It was honestly one of my most joyful audiobook experiences, and I have listened to a lot!
There is more production in this one than in most. It is loaded with sound effects and music to enhance the character experience.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!
