Publisher's summary

The first two limbs of the eight-fold path of yoga sutras - the basic text for classical yoga - are examined in this spiritual guide to the practice of yoga. Foundational to all yogic thought, they are considered to be the guidelines to the yoga way of living that free individuals to take ownership of their lives, direct them toward the fulfillment they seek, and gain the skills to choose attitude, thought, and action.

The first five guidelines are referred to as the yamas - a Sanskrit word that translates to "restraints" - and encompass nonviolence, truthfulness, not stealing, nonexcess, and nonpossessiveness. The last five are referred to as the niyamas, or observances - purity, contentment, self-discipline, self-study, and surrender.

Current life examples of practicing yogic principles

The author speaks naturally about applying these ancient good-hearted restraints and observances in modern day life. I am brand new yoga instructor and found this useful for natural integration of the Yamas and Niyamas into everyday life.

Best book ever!

I’m going through a very difficult time. This book has given me the insight and hope I needed to get through it all. Including life itself. I have recommended this book to others. I hope others will take and get from it nonviolence that we do need in the West.

A Jewel of Spiritual Guidance

This book is rich in both wisdom and spiritual guidance/techniques. I really enjoyed the narration, and there was so much to take in that I know I will have to revisit it again in print. This book would be a great Christmas or New Year's gift as it goes through 12 months of practices so you can embody/experience the Yamas and Niyamas in your everyday life.

Life changing!

I’ve never paused an audiobook so much to write down quotes. So many things to realize and think about and process. I bought the paper copy too so I could reread and think about again and again.

YES! To this book!!!

I absolutely loved this book. The ancient wisdom of the Yamas and Niyamas paired with relatable pop-culture references and intelligent wit!
I was not a fan of the narrators computer type voice, yet as I continued to listen, when the humerus bits of text would surface, the narrators deadpan delivery somehow made it even funnier.
Do your soul a favor and enjoy listening to this book!

Clear understanding

Love the delivery, examples, and homework. The homework provides steps that guide the “how to” on incorporating Yama and Niyama in one’s life. Very easy to understand.
