池 田 雅 延
小林秀雄先生が亡くなられてからもう30年にもなりますが、先生の本はいまなお売れ続け、年々新しい読者が生まれ続けています。そして近年は、小林秀雄を読みたいがどこから読んだらよいか、何と何を読んだらよいかといった質問もたくさんいただくようになりました。そこへ昨年の秋、新潮社の倉庫をリニューアルしてオープンする〈soko〉で小林先生のことを聞かせてほしいという相談が寄せられ、それなら「小林秀雄作品案内」といった趣で、私が先生から直接聞いた話も織りこみながら進めていこうということになりました。
小林先生は、日本における近代批評の創始者・構築者として大きな足跡を残しましたが、高校時代・大学時代は小説家を志していました。その小林青年が、小説家ではなく批評家となるに至った過程には、今にして思えば宿命的といってよい岐路がありました。2015年4月からの6ヶ月は、「一ツの脳髄」「様々なる意匠」「志賀直哉」「Xへの手紙」「アンドレ・ジイド」「故郷を失った文学」の6作を取り上げ、〈批評家小林秀雄〉が誕生するまでの道筋をたどります。
もっとも、この講座は、本格的な小林秀雄解説を行おうとするものではありません。〈soko〉へ足を運んで下さった方々との、いわば内輪の茶話会です。そもそも私は、こういうお話をするについては素人です。したがって、お聞き苦しいところも多々あることと思いますが、そのあたりはどうかお赦し下さって、ネットを通じて〈soko〉の茶話会にご参加下さり、小林秀雄作品を読まれるに際しての一助としていただければ幸いです。
