Publisher's Summary

In Wyrd Sisters, the enchanting world of Discworld is turned upside down by 3 meddling witches: Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, and Magrat Garlick. Their interference in royal politics causes kingdoms to wobble, crowns to topple, knives to flash, and citizens to shudder in fear. Terry Pratchett's vividly imaginative story takes you on a journey with hunchbacked monarchs, lost crowns, disguised heirs, refueling broomsticks, and frightening thunderstorms, as the three sisters battle the odds to restore the rightful king to the throne. This is the sixth book in the Discworld series.

Happy I gave it a chance, despite other reviews

I was a little worried after reading the other reviews here on Audible that found fault with the dramatization provided by the narrator and also one review that found fault with the audio quality itself. I am glad that I am a completist and gave it a try anyway. If you are familiar with the other witch-centric books narrated by Celia Imrie, you will not be surprised by the style of dramatization here. I found that it gave life to the book and greatly prefer this to a flat reading. The audio quality was just fine, too, with no static or background noises that I noticed. I am sad that some people might pass over listening to this book, based on the negative reviews here, since I think this is one of the best Discworld novels so far in the series in terms of plot and characters.

Glitchy

Love the book, love the performance, but I’m finding huge chunks of the book being repeated (I checked it wasn’t my phone or the app, the recording was still progressing with the time showing to indicated it hadn’t accidentally jumped back).

Very frustrating to find the spot to recommence without having to relisten to the whole thing!

Love Discworld but not the narrator

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I would vastly prefer an unabridged version of this book read by Nigel Planer or Stephen Briggs.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Celia Imrie?

As stated; a version read by Nigel Planer or Stephen Briggs.

Any additional comments?

Mrs Imrie's voice does not agree with me at and actually ruined the listening experience for me. Although she really has a very nice voice I found her interpretation of most of the important characters ridiculous and irrating. One of my, normally favourite characters, Nanny Ogg now sounds like a stuttering, retarded drunk and the Duchess and Duke are sometimes very hard to understand. I am an avid TP fan and read (and re-read) all of his books. Also, I thoroughly enjoy listening to the audio versions of the books. They simply never tire. But this one, will remain on the shelf for a very long time, before I feel inclined to listen to it again. I would definitely buy an unabridged version read by Nigel or Stephen. Mrs Imrie's voice, I think, is better suited for a different kind of audiobook.

Great book, well read, catastrophic editing

Large portions of the book are repeated several times in what can only be a major editing mistake. Thought I was having deja vu, or if it was some sort of story-telling move. Really incredible this hasn't been fixed.
Otherwise, the voice-actor does a good job, nice with a female voice in a Prachett book. Audio quality is spotty at times. Book is typical Pratchett quality, which is great.

Great Story but narrator not great

What did you love best about Wyrd Sisters?

A very original parody of Macbeth.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Celia Imrie?

Steven Briggs without a doubt.

Any additional comments?

Celia Imrie's male characters all sound about ten years old. Some of her character's voices are hard to understand because she tries to change the characteristics of her voice instead of using different accents. Her style of reading is better suited to children's books.

This narrator has a good grip on Pratchett!

While others found the dramatisation of the narrator a bit over the top, I enjoyed it immensely. I was disappointed the rest of the witches series has not been narrated by Celia Imrie. The voices and very hard to verbalise phrases and humour were nicely balanced.

As for the story - if you're a Pratchett fan, you will love it. If you're not, you probably will be once you've listened to this story.

Fine story. Terrible narrator.

I'm a big fan of Terry Pratchett audiobooks - I think I have almost all of them from Audible now. But to be honest, I couldn't even finish this one. Celie Imrie is a fine actor, but I don't think she understands that the Discworld books are supposed to be funny, lighthearted and a little absurdist, even when they're dealing with 'darker' themes. She reads this as though it's a highly serious, somber, and utterly without humour. I never thought I'd say this about a Discworld novel, but listening to this was kind of depressing.

Great story and narrator. Glitchy sound file.

Unfortunately the sound file was in one chunk, so it was hard to search through. There are two occasions where clips from earlier in the book appear out of nowhere.

Noooo!

I am one of Terry’s biggest fans and love his audio books but can’t listen to this narrator a minute longer! Could only manage to listen to two hours max! It gets more annoying with every word she speaks! Hate to criticize narrators but she ruined this completely!!!

So much wrong with the quality

Chapters repeat themself with bad quality. And Celia Imrie is just not a good enogh reader.
The real runtime is about 8-9 hours when repeating chapters are taken out.

Hard work

This is a good book spoiled and Ive read the book a number of times. I dont think its just the narrator. It sounds like it has been recorded by one narrator and other narrators have added different character voices but with bad editing. There are too many silences in the narrative, it doesnt flow so you loose the story line. It makes listening hard work. Not at all the quality I would expect after listening to other Discworld audio books. I would not recommend this audio book until it has been re-recorded. Bring back Nigel Planner or Tony Robinson please.

It just does snot work for me

This must be one of the few Discworlds I have not listened to. In my head the voices are perfect from Planar and Briggs, even Robinson. Nanny Ogg does not sound right the way Celia Imrie voices them. Good story as ever but the voice characterisation jars.

Dissapointing narration and sound quality

Unfortunately I have to agree that Celia, whilst being a wonderful actress, isn't on par with Nigel Planer as a narrator of tp books. Secondly the sound quality of the recording is so poor I find myself straining to follow what is being said. All in all, not up to their usual standard.

Poor audio and (sadly) poor narration

What would have made Wyrd Sisters better?

Having somebody else read it and having it produced properly and recorded without the use of defective recording equipment.

How could the performance have been better?

I'm sure this narrator is capable but it just didn't work for me and I can only say that somebody who enjoyed TP would have been good. It sounds as if she hated the whole business. This is not her fault, but is the producers as she was only doing what was asked.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Good story. Painful narration.

Any additional comments?

If this was your first taste of TP you'd probably not try it again, but please do give it him a 2nd chance!

Excellent read let down by poor naration

I tend to agree with the previous review (if not with quite the level of invective). The narration is wooden bordering on monotonous, especially when compared to that of Nigel Planer.
I am familiar with the television work of Celia Imrie and I admire it greatly. However, this is by no means her finest performance and my advice to fellow audible users is save yourself the money and buy something else (witches abroad is unabridged and a good old Pratchett romp too). Alternatively, if you don't mind abridged titles, this is read read by Nigel Planer with much more aplomb.

Sorry Celia

I have to agree with the other reviewers I'm afraid. This was my first Terry Pratchett download and the first download I've ever given up on. The narration is as previously stated wooden snd just doesnt bring the much loved characters to life. The witches books are my favourite Pratchett series and this is a real let down. I had to stop listening half way through part one. I have already downloaded Witches abroad and hope it is lots better.

Do not purchase

OK, so I know the old Pratchett audio books all suffer terribly from poor sound quality, but I'd been prepared for that. This was no exception. Celia Imrie is a fantastic actress, but apparently never really read any of the books so her voices really did not suit the characters, particularly that of nanny Ogg although that has already been mentioned in other reviews here. I will however be returning this audio book as while the above two complaints would have been bearable, the third problem wasn't. The audio book shows as being a 14hr listen which should have rung alarm bells right from the start as very few Pratchett novels would come close to that. A couple of hours into the story, the reason became apparent, when the narrative suddenly skipped back to a previous section of the story and continued again from there. One mistake might have been tolerable, but this did this several times during the story making it very difficult to follow. In fact the "Audible thanks you for listening" message comes at about two thirds of the way through the recording when it ends the first time. Much as I love Pratchett, I really don't recommend wasting your time and money on this version.

Wrong choice of narrator!

I wish I'd have read the reviews before I made this purchase! However being a big Discworld fan I didn't even bother and unfortunately the previous complaints are certainly justified! I wouldn't say it's poorly narrated just the wrong choice of narrator for Pratchett! From being a kid listening to my Discworld cassettes, I've got used to a male narrator and listening to this book just didn't feel like I was listening to a Discword book. Obviously a very personal issue, however I'd have thought for anyone who's listened to a number of his audiobooks will feel the same. I really struggled to get into it!

Very Disappointing Narration

Celia, you are a fantastic actress, but you just don't get Granny and Nanny. They may be old but the aren't decrepit. These are two of the most charasmatic and powerful witches on the Discworld. Both have huge personalities (very different from each other but still huge). This Audio Book made them sound like they are half dead and fully cackling. These are not evil Disney witches. I'm not even going to go into the nasally mess of Hwel. Holding your nose while speaking the lines is just lazy narration. So disappointed. Would love Stephen Briggs to narrate EVERY Discworld book. He nails it every time.

Sir Terry as brilliant as ever!

As for the story, classicly brilliant Terry Pratchett. The witches and Death are my favourite characters! The narrator does all the voices very well too! But, the volume level is infuriating!! especially if listening via earpieces while travelling in the car. one moment is so damn quiet you can't hear anything then the next moment it blasts your eardrums! very frustrating to try to listen to.

It was a great story, Terry Pratchett has never let me down. Celia Imrie did a fabulous job of bringing the characters alive. Her tone was great and the manner in which she read each character in voices was wonderful.

Great story but wrong voices

This story is one of Pratchett's best but the performer reading it couldn't capture two of the main characters.
Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg were made to sound like two doddering old ladies, especially Nanny Ogg. These witches were old but definitely NOT decrepit.
Spoilt an otherwise well done performance.

Loved the story. Only a small whinge, at times the reader got a little loud and screechy. Otherwise I love Terry Pratchett.
