Publisher's summary

Ryan Shanley prefers to be called Shan. It's not much, but it helps put some distance between his life during and after serving in the Union army. And he'll put even more distance between the two once he arrives in the Wyoming Territory, where he has a land grant for two square miles.

On the stage to Tico, the town nearest his ranch, he meets Sarahlee Gordon. She was only planning to visit Wyoming long enough to sell the cabin she inherited from her uncle. But the attraction between the two becomes obvious on the stage and grows after they arrive.

Between a blossoming relationship and the rugged territory, Shan realizes that he is not nearly as prepared as he believed himself to be, but he remains determined to build the ranch he dreamed of escaping to while serving on the front lines.

Very disappointing

I usually like the author’s books but this was so slow paced I lost internet by chapter 6 and couldn’t continue.

A disappointment!

I rarely give up on a publication but this tale droned on with minutiae that did not carry the story forward. At times the writing was beautifully descriptive alternating with boring details of when they ate, when the cows were milked, when the animals were fed, etc, over and over again. The characters did not seem well developed so I couldn't understand their motives enough to become invested in them. Even the chemistry between the love interests seemed improbable. At chapter 13, I fast forwarded to the already predictable end and it wasn't pretty. No HEA here. If you want a tale of the way humans can mess up their lives, there is better written literature for that.

Ending on a positive note, the narrator did a great job.

Great narration

This story isn't a typical 21-century romance. And the story is dark and not 50 Shades dark. More like shades of Ethan Fromme dark and gloomy. However, the author did a great job presenting an alternate mood and pace from a different time and place. I wish that some of the threads of the story had been fleshed out like how the character of Amos Blessing figured into Sarah Lee's life. The best thing about this book experience for me was the gifted narrator.

Soooo good!!

I’m so glad I stumbled across this book! The imagery and description are amazing!! Better than anything I’ve read in a long time! And the narrator is my new favorite! His voice is like honey. He did such a great job!
