Publisher's summary

Sir Charles Huxley kept a dark secret — a secret the former government minister should have taken to the grave.

His son, William, lives an uneventful life in his late father’s shadow. He never planned on becoming a middle-aged bachelor and he definitely didn’t plan a career as a low-level politician, but that is now William’s lot...until it’s not.

One evening, William has a chance encounter which sets off an escalating series of sinister events, culminating in a damning revelation about his father’s past. That revelation drags William into the darkest of blackmail plots.

With his blackmailer having cunningly closed every exit, William is trapped, and faces personal and financial ruin. That is until an odd job man working at his local bar steps forward and offers help.

With no alternative, William is forced to join his peculiar saviour on a desperate mission to stop his blackmailer, and unearth the shattering truth about the wrong’un.

Excellent read

2nd book about Clement and it was just as good as the 1st. Mr Pearson does a great job at creating a story and a after story. I usually don't care for the after stories but his books are a testament to his great writing. On several occasions while reading I must go the map of England search the places he talks about. At these times it feels like I've gone on vacation to a place I've have always wanted to see.

Couldn't make it to end of first chapter

Sadly the narrator seems to have attended the Jeremy Clarkson school of inflection. So difficult to listen to. And on that bombshell I am returning this title.

Dreadful earsplitting narration!

Was I listening to the football results... With the narrator only having one dreadful pitch towards the end of his sentance? What a shame as I loved the first book. I struggled to listen, but eventually the voice ruined this book for me. What was achieved by using such an awful story teller with a good story to tell???

I I honestly thought the narrator was messing around

I simply couldn’t listen to the book
this is by far is the worst narrator I have ever heard
I have over 1000 books are in my Audible collection so that really is saying something
And they will not let you do a review unless you at least give the narrator one star
Seriously he is definitely not worth one star

Don't be discouraged by negative narration reviews

I am a huge Keith A. Pearson fan and have read/listened to all his other books. However, I avoided this one (as I suspect a few others have done) as a result of the several very negative comments on the narration. However, eventually I had to continue the Clement series, so I invested one of my credits on this book.

At first, the prejudice that had inevitably been created in my mind reacted to the narrator's style and I did find it a bit distraction. However this only lasted until half way through Chapter 2, when I stopped thinking about it and just enjoyed the book. By the end, I really couldn't remember what had annoyed me about the narrator. He was fine. So, please don't be put off even if you listen to the 'free sample' and are tempted to decide against the book as a result.

As for the book itself, there was plenty to enjoy. KAP's characters are well sculpted and you really care about them as the book progresses. It's a decent book.

In my view, however, it isn't his best. I know you have to adopt a willing suspension of disbelief when reading a book, but there are quite a few things here which simply wouldn't happen (and I am not talking about Clement's appearance). Without giving too much away, someone in the position of the main protagonist would have known that contacting the police immediately would have avoided all the subsequent problems that arose. There are other examples of silly - irrational and illogical - decisions being taken, but I cannot go into details without revealing too much of the story.

Never mind. It's still a great read and as with all KAP's books, I felt the familiar feeling of disappointment when this one finished.

Horrific narrator!

It is a testament to the story that I keep listening to this book. The narrator is abso-bloody-lutely horrendous but as it happens, I love Clement more than I hate this guy.
Why not keep the Book 1 narrator for the whole series?? Wrong!

Well read but slow and plodding

Alexander Doddy did a good job reading this Clement book. However the story was a slow start with a dim protagonist. Not as good as Who Sent Clement? Which got straight to the meat of the story.

Gave up after a short while. Just bored.

Quirky

A bit slow to get going but enjoyable. Poor Clement - he does his best!

Excellent story, and the narrator was spot on

Really enjoyed this second book in the series. The protagonist came across as a likeable character - even for an MP ;-) and I found the narrator to be a perfect fit for the character. The change in narrator between book 1 and 2 was a little jarring for the first couple of paragraphs, but once you settle in to the character, it fits so well.

Looking forward to book 3 and where our big man may end up next...

Very Enjoyable

I’ve read the other reviews and I think I will contradicting most of them. I thought the narrater was an excellent choice for this book. He injected the right tone pretty much throughout. The book doesn’t call for a somber tone - it’s a light hearted, and slightly silly at times, good fun adventure type thing and mostly against the clock. There’s little taxing about it, but the story is fun. Admittedly I found I had correctly guessed most of the twists and turns way before they were revealed (no spoilers) but that didn’t wreck the ride and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

In my opinion this was far better than the first in the series and the narrater was far better suited to present it to us, disregarding his awful cockney accent. I’ve already got the next two in the series in my library and am launching straight into book 3 in 10 minutes. I read and listen to all sorts of books, both fiction and nonfiction. I have plenty of room in my life for an easygoing and often humorous adventure of this type. As is often the case with a light hearted book such as this, don’t question some of the silly decisions made by the characters……. It’s not real!!

I’m waffling. This book was great fun and the narrater great. Ignore the negative reviews, just relax and enjoy it.
