Editorial reviews

Meet Marcus Valerius Aquila, brave centurion and condemned hero, in Book One Wounds of Honour, written by Anthony Riches and read by professional narrator Saul Reichlin. Marcus is in hiding from the Imperial Army who executed his father. He takes on an alias and lives in secret among the outcasts of Hadrian’s Wall. Then fate catches up with him and he must soon come out of the shadows to lead an entire army into war against the rebels. His path is wrought with danger but he fights for victory, justice and honour. Available now from Audible.

Publisher's summary

Thrilling, authentic, and action packed, this novel introduces soldier hero Marcus Valerius: a centurion stationed on Hadrian's Wall in the second century during a revolt against the Roman Empire.

Marcus Valerius Aquila has scarcely landed in Britannia when he has to run for his life - condemned to dishonorable death by power-crazed emperor Commodus. The plan is to take a new name, serve in an obscure regiment on Hadrian's Wall, and lie low until he can hope for justice. Then a rebel army sweeps down from the wastes north of the wall, and Marcus has to prove he's hard enough to lead a century in the front line of a brutal, violent war.

I enjoyed it. I'll read the next one.

Fans of Roman Legions in Britannia will like this story. Nicely detailed descriptions of battles and the carnage they inflict. It's a well researched and written book. I was warned about the voice of Marcus...eh...top notch voice work though.

NOT BAD FOR SOMETHING I STUMBLED UPON

If he had Pebbles narrate this I think we would have a real winning series. Plenty of fast passed action with a good storyline. Worth a listen.

Trite

Of all the Roman Era, Legion centered novels I've read or listened to, this one is by far on the bottom my list. Why? The ugly "T" above says it all including a narrator as exciting as a buried Sparta.
