Soso addition to the series

2.5-3 stars

***fair warning, this review has a few small spoilers but nothing major***

This was an alright story. TBH, I was enjoying it at first but the ending wasn't to my liking and really brought down the story for me.

Liv is an intern at a newspaper that she's hoping to get a permanent job at. She has always loved writing and it's been her plan to be a writer since she was a kid. Liv used to tutor Vince when they were in high school but for some reason (that never seems well explained to me) Vince left Liv and after recovering from the heartbreak, Liv learned to move on.

Vince is a MMA fighter that's getting ready to fight for the championship title. Vince's mom is a drug addict that couldn't take care of herself, let alone take care of Vince. From a very young age, Vince had to take care of himself and his mom and it was a rough life. Vince has a lot of anger issues and got in fights in high school until one of Vince's teachers got him to start working with Nico in the gym. It helped because it gave Vince a place to work out his aggressions and stay off the streets.

As an intern, Liv is competing against another woman (a spoiled rich skank who only got the intern position because her daddy is rich) for the permanent position at the newspaper. They're both given assignments for articles to write in hopes of doing well enough at them to land the job in the end. Liv is given an assignment to write an article about a fighter that also teaches women's self defense classes and doesn't look at the info before rushing to one of the classes to take part and hopefully speak to her intended interview subject. She's shocked to find that the instructor is her high school crush, Vince. Since he broke her heart back in high school (and he's obviously still a huge man whore) Liv wasn't very thrilled about being near him again and tries to get out of her assignment...not that's she's very successful thanks to Vince.

Vince has slept around a lot and treats women like crap but once he sees Liv again, he can't forget about her. He decides to pursue her and once he makes an effort, Liv has trouble staying away from him. They come together as a couple but there are some issues that make things difficult for them. The main issue is her job because she's put in a horrible position where they want her to use her relationship with Vince to get a story. There's also issues with Vince's mom and her drug problems to deal with and ties into other crap. They deal with those issues and more and end the story with a HEA together.

So...this story wasn't great and I'd already been planning to rate it around 3 stars but it was going to be a high 3 star rating that I was still planning to recommend. But then I hit the 87% mark in the story...Vince and Liv have a big fight and the story makes it seem like he slept with a skank...one that disgusted me so much that I almost DNF the story right then and there. I did continue and Vince later claimed that nothing happened between him and the skank but I don't really know if I believed him or not. Regardless of whether he slept with the skank or not, I just couldn't get into the relationship between Vince and Liv after that. Overall, I ended this story feeling a cross between disappointed and "meh" so I can't recommend it. :P

Skip this one...

I really wanted to like this book and I DID stick with it until the end, however, it left a lot to be desired...

This is my first Vi Keeland read/listen and I've heard good things about her books so I was disappointed to find a very simple storyline, lack of depth in characters, and poor narration from the female narrator in particular.

Without giving any spoilers, I'll address my gripes:

1) The story had a lot of potential but the author fell short of giving the detail that could have made these characters really come to life. Vince, the male protagonist, had a lot of "issues" in his past (and present) but they were mostly glossed over with sparse detail. I think Keeland was attempting to create a sense of anticipation but there was no big reveal that I would call satisfying after drawing out my curiosity. I did not listen to the first book in the series (because the reviews talk about how bad the male narrator's performance was in attempting the Italian accent of Nico), so I can leave a little room for incontinuity since Vince may have appeared in the previous book.

2) Normally, I can overlook a lot of missing depth in trade for hot sex in my romance novels - but this book just didn't do it for me in the heat department. There were a few sex scenes that were good, but again, so many missed opportunities in the story department.

3) I will not listen to Tatiana Sokolov narrate a book again. Her voice isn't unpleasant, but her inflection did not match the emotion of the characters. It reminded me of a news anchor reading from a prompter, describing a tragic accident with a smile on her face. She also has a midwestern accent, so if that's not your thing then definitely skip this book. The male narrator wasn't offensive, but he wasn't great either.

All to say, it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't good in my opinion.

Loved the first book, but this was too similar

I would have liked to have given this book 4-5 stars and had I not read the first in the series, I likely would have done that. Unfortunately I was so excited about the first book, that I needed to read the rest in the series, so I downloaded right away.

There wasn't anything that I didn't like per se about this book. What was aggravating, was that although, the characters and turmoil were different and each book can be read as a stand alone in the series, hearing book one and book two back to back were like hearing a song with different main lyrics, but same chorus.

There were just too many lines in this book that were the same as lines in the first book, even though the story was different. By the end, something that the female character said, made me yell in my head, "THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT THE LAST FEMALE SAID." I appreciate that the characters' lives were different enough to be a different story, but too many repeats to make it completely enjoyable for me. Will possibly listen to the third book still, but will wait a while, to let the wording slip from my memory a little bit.

Love the ending on this book!!

I cried at the end of this book. I love the results we enjoy because someone is willing to loose their life for mine and my families. It’s bittersweet. Wish the words GDamn were never uttered out of anyone’s mouth but great job on the story.

The Invincible!

I loved Vinny and Liv story! It was a second chance romance done well! I loved how their paths were crossed as adults. I thought that their story flowed well. I wanted Vinny to have the love he deserved. I am glad they were able to work through their issues and make their relationship work. I loved the loyalty between the couple. Job well done!

It was ok

I wasn’t a fan of the narrators
The guy tried to hard to sound like rocky
And the female had speech impediment
The story started good
But not long into it
I knew exactly what was going to happen
I listened hoping to be proved wrong but I wasn’t

Fell a little short of book one!

This was a good book. It wasn’t a great book, however. For one thing, it wasn’t as original as the first book. For another thing, it used my most hated type of angst in a romance; keeping the truth from the person you supposedly love. I have always felt that it was a cheap way to develop angst, in a plot. There are so many different ways to get an emotional response from the reader/listener then the same old thing that is used in 75% of the Romances.
Putting that aside, I was glad to see this Hero get his HEA. I started routing for him in the first book, when he was a young teen. Moving on to book three!

Needed better male narrator

Loved the story but the narrator for the male voice for Vinny was not believable. It sounds like an old man's voice speaking the words for a young man. Not a good pick for Vinny's voice.
