Publisher's summary

"The end was near." Voices from the Zombie War.

The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched firsthand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet.

He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living - or at least the undead - hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years.

Chilling Story of Mass Contagion

The srory consists of a series of interviews with key characters who survived the World War Z. The characters are from all countries and different phases of the war. The 'interviews' are frighteningly believable and take us on a journey of mass destruction and breakdown of society. An excellent story.

Not just for Zombie lovers

This book is by far one of my favourites and a wonderfully, easy, thought provoking read. This is a fantastic disaster story with details that are beyond imagination. The author must have had a very dark time dreaming this one up! There are stories from all around the world told from the perspective of a key person or a simple survivor all told by believable characters invoking emotions that are relatable to everyone. It's a story about human nature which is why I think that even people who would normally shy away from science fiction or zombie books would enjoy this book. My only regret is that it isn't longer.

Who was your favorite character and why?
Without ruining the story, my favourite character was the guy who marketed the immunisation. The shock you feel really merged the story and the real world for me.

Which character – as performed by Stephen Hogan – was your favorite?
The blind Japaneese guy was a fantastic read

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The Israeli Palistinean story was one that brought me to tears.

Fantastic story all 'round.

What made the experience of listening to World War Z the most enjoyable?

The portrayal of the different characters was so good, they all had correct accents and emotions. This definitely added a lot to the book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

All of it.

Any additional comments?

This book is amazing, the whole story is so well researched and in depth. I would recommend this to anyone who likes intelligent and captivating books. The audio for this book just added that extra something to the story, each voice was perfectly suited to its character. I will definitely listen to this again some time.

Love it, love it, love it

If you could sum up World War Z in three words, what would they be?

Variance, interesting, involved

What other book might you compare World War Z to and why?

I would like I know what I could compare this to so that I could find more like it. It is essentially the typical zombie story, but told to an amazing depth because it is told from so many more perspectives. It is a wonderfully unique entrance point.

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?

The Japanese researcher, I can't remember who played him. That was a really interesting one. Even though the accent wasn't really that Japanese sounding, it was performed very well emotion wise

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There was a point where one smuggler is asked a a question about his own unethical behaviour during the first stages of the zombie war and his response is quite amusing.

Any additional comments?

This book I awesome and made so much better as an audiobook. I got my subscription here JUST to get this book, so do indeed try it out.

Really great not what I was expecting

Thoroughly enjoyed this book makes me think what life might be like if this really happened especially the covid vaccine stuff seeming relatable to the “vaccine” in the book. It’s fake and didn’t work.

Well worth the wait - but not a gorefest

Would you listen to World War Z again? Why?

It has long been one of my favourite books in written form, and I would definitely listen to it again. It is a fascinating story, either to read or listen to.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

The various narrators all had accents suitable to their section of the story. This added greatly to the listening experience.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The part with the K9 teams got to me, and probably would to any dog lover.

Any additional comments?

This book has been available in abridged for a while, but I held out for the unabridged version which I hoped would come, and I am so glad I did. The book is very cleverly structured, with each narrative section leading on to the next, and some characters coming back in at later parts of the story. It is a fascinating and "realistic" view of a zombie apocalypse and how it might be rolled back. If you;re looking for gore and schlock horror, this isn't the book for you, but if you;re looking for good writing and characterisation then get this.

Great story, amazing audiobook

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It's a really unique way to present a lot of interesting topics covering war, politics, sociology, history and humanity in general.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I liked listening to the stories of the everyday people surviving the Zombie war

Any additional comments?

The only bad point is the really really bad Australian accent of one character.

Thought-provoking and Beautifully Narrated

Even if you don't care for a zombie novel, this is just a great book - full of interesting ideas, social commentary and wonderful stories. Some of the individual accounts have stuck with me in a way that I wasn't expecting. The narration was very absorbing and added a level of realism, even if the accents weren't always spot on. Thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook!
