Publisher's summary

Danger is never far from Audra’s family farm in Lithuania. She always avoids the occupying Russian Cossack soldiers, who insist that everyone must become Russian - they have banned Lithuanian books, religion, culture, and even the language. But Audra knows her parents are involved in something secret and perilous.

When Cossacks arrive abruptly at their door, Audra’s parents insist that she flee, taking with her an important package and instructions for where to deliver it. But escape means abandoning her parents to a terrible fate.

As Audra embarks on a journey to deliver the mysterious package, she faces unimaginable risks, and soon she becomes caught up in a growing resistance movement. Can joining the underground network of book smugglers give Audra a chance to rescue her parents?

Wonderful Historical MG

I love how Jennifer Nielsen can weave such rich history into a beautiful story. This book addresses heart-breaking events and challenges that anyone can learn from and find ways to relate. I love Audra and how her ignorant fear turns into bravery once she better understands what her world is all about. So many great things to be learned from this book. It took me a little bit to really get into it, but once I did, I loved it. Well done!

Outstanding Book by Jennifer A. Nielsen

I love all of Nielsen's books, but her historical fiction ones are my favorite. She has a unique ability to transport readers to the location and time period if her stories. Her books are gripping and inspiring. Words on Fire was no exception. I loved every second of it and found myself completely lost in it's pages.

A must read!!! (Better yet, a MUST listen to!!!)

“To be without learning is to be without eyes.” - Lithuanian proverb
It’s a teacher’s dream to read about people wanting to books so bad that adults and kids were smuggling books into Lithuania from Russia. Book smugglers had their own Underground Railroad to get books, knowledge, into the hand of Lithuanians. These books were their culture, their language, their identities that the Russian Cossack soldiers were trying to vanish.
