"I am just a common man who is true to his beliefs." (John Wooden)

Evoking days gone by when coaches were respected as much for their off-court performances as for their success on the court, Wooden presents the timeless wisdom of legendary basketball coach John Wooden.

In honest and telling passages about virtually every aspect of life, Coach shares his personal philosophy on family, achievement, success, and excellence. Raised on a small farm in south-central Indiana, he offers lessons and wisdom learned throughout his career at UCLA, and life as a dedicated husband, father, and teacher.

These lessons, along with personal letters from Bill Walton, Denny Crum, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Bob Costas, among others, have made Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections on and off the Court an inspirational classic.

Gold

Like Jesus, John Wooden knew that the Secret of Life was measuring YourSelf against Eternal Spiritual Standards/Principles...rather than "worrying" or focusing on other people (99.9% of whom are lost and all watching eachother for answers)

How to be a better person

I enjoyed this book. Wooden’s objective in writing this book seems to be less about basketball and much more about how to be a better human.

Coach Wooden was a great teacher and inspiration

Upon listening to this book, I learned that Coach Wooden was a demanding and highly principled man who loved to teach and coach, but, more importantly, he knew what was most important in life. He learned it from his parents, and spent the rest of his life trying to live to his highest potential. The book was inspirational and though the Pyramid of Success was not a complex process, it was highly valuable tool to learn and benefit from.

Words of wisdom, bathed in humility

I received this book as a HS graduation gift after being captain of the varsity basketball team. I remember peaking it open here or there but never delving into it. Thirteen years later, I’m back at listening to it and sad that it is already over. Coach Wooden’s poetic words about leadership transcend the topic of basketball and focus truly on lessons for life. Anyone can take a token of wisdom just from a few minutes of listening, but my takeaways centered around hard work, humility, and being your best. You do not have to worry about your opponent, your boss, your future job, or any potential obstacle that you have no control over... but you can focus on being YOUR best self and knowing that you did everything you can within your potential. As a teacher and coach, I see how so many “youngsters” (as Wooden likes to call them) don’t know the value of hard work and focusing on character, not reputation. It reminds me how these traits are coachable, starting with your example, and giving kids the opportunity to build those traits a little at a time. I was impressed with his level of detail with practices, often planning for hours, fine tuning the plan down to the minute. These reminds me as a teacher how important lesson planning is, but in life, simply being intentional with our time. Too often we give in to feelings and emotions, and often don’t get what we’d like done because we react to emotional impulses. Sticking to goals by setting a plan is key. I’ve learned so much from this book and know that reading it once only skimmed the surface. I plan to listen to it over again to get a fuller sense of all the gems Wooden shares! You will enjoy this quick listen!

John Wooden was a wonderful man

This is a story about a great man. I recommend it to everyone.

John Wooden dedicated his life to teaching young men how to live with morality and purpose. He lead by example, he loved and cherished his family. John was an award winning basketball coach, a great family man. He taught the boys how to play basketball, more importantly how to be good men.

Life Coach!

Beside the Bible, I have listened/read this book more than any other in my Library. I bought two copies of the audio CD version so I could lend it out to my friends. I have the hard copy and now the Audible copy. My Doctor listened to it and described it as life changing! My boss told me his children could not get enough when they traveled on vacation. It is so foundational that it should be required reading for every parent, grandparent, teenager, supervisor, employee, teacher, student, coach, athlete, Social Worker, Counselor, Law Enforcement Officer, Fire Fighter, Soldier, Airman, Sailor, Marine, Guardsman... everyone! It puts into words all those things that we know to be true (like the Book of Proverbs). As Coach Wooden states, "I am not as good as I ought to be, but I am better than I used to be." Enjoy and be joyful!
